Webmaster

A few of you may have noticed that the web site has not been updated to any extent for a few days. The reason is that I changed my broadband supplier at the weekend and I have had an interesting few days configuring my new router to suit my unusual set up. There will be a bit of catching up to do, but hopefully normal service will now be resumed.

Wharfedale Hoodies

Tim Done is collating a new order for Wharfedale hoodies. If anyone is interested, please let him or Val know ASAP and preferably before the end of the week in order to secure the next delivery. Prices are £23 each for both the junior and senior sizes and are available in blue or pink.

A great run by Sam Watson saw him finish in 8th place and lead the Wharfedalers home. He was just in front of Chris Newman who finished in 10th place and was first policeman. The triumvirate was made up by Mark McGoldrick who finished in 22nd place.

First Wharfedale lady was Cathy Bradley.

Bradley Fell Race - 4 September 2011

Wharfedale Juniors Break Two Records

Bradley Fell Race
Race Winner - Ton Adams of Ilkley Harriers

James Hall is flying at the moment and he broke the U17 course record set by Billy Pinder, whilst in the U9 race, Jack Muir also set a new course record. Tim Done has written a full  report  of the day.

Grisedale Horseshoe - 3 September 2011

Whilst a lot of Wharfedalers headed North, Simon Franklin was the sole Wharfedaler to take on this race. It sounds an interesting race, but awful conditions. Simon has written an account of the day, available from the link below.

The Muker Show fell race was a counter for the BOFRA Senior Championship and the above picture shows what the Championship means to the two main contenders. Both Alastair Dunn and Ted Mason have five wins apiece, and it is down to the last three Championship races to decide who will take the 2011 title. It may even go down to the final race at Wasdale Head Show...Kirkfell. Now that would be one to watch!

In the ladies race, The talented young Melanie Hyder took the honours, with Cathy Bradley finishing second and Lynn Whittaker third.

Lothersdale Show - 10 September 2011

Both the show and the fell race do not attract the numbers that they used to, which is a pity, as this is a very old fell race and it is run on unusal lines in that everyone (juniors & seniors) all go off together and they all run the same course.

This year, Shaun Chew looked to have it all sewn up by the time he reached the summit, but he was pipped to the post by Harry Muir.

Bofra, Burnsall - 11 September 2011

The news is that Ted Mason won the men's race, with Fred Bosomworth second. Alastair Dunn finished third with Sam Watson fourth. Melanie Hyder won the ladies race.

Devil's Beeftub - 10 September 2011

Bronze Medal for Judy Howells

This was the final race of the British Fell Running Championships and was a tough 2miles / 750ft climbing. Judy Howells had her best result of the Championships to date to finish 8th lady overall and 2nd LV40. This meant that Judy secured the bronze medal in the LV40 championships.

Pub Run - Wednesday 21 September 2011

This is due to take place from the Slater's Arms at Bradley. However, please note that in view of the fact that the nights are now starting to draw in, the run will commence at 6:45 pm as opposed to the normal 7:00 pm start.

Gisburn Forest Social Bike Ride - Sunday 2 October 2011

It is almost two years ago that we had a social bike ride in Gisburn Forest. Again, it will cater for all abilties and everyone, mums, dads and children, as well as more serious bikers are welcome. The ride will last around two hours and will follow the many cycle tracks in Gisburn Forest. Meet at the Cocklet Car Park, grid reference SD745550 ready for a 10:30 am start. This is off the B6478 road which runs between Slaidburn and Tosside. If it is a nice day, bring a picnic lunch. Otherwise, there is a cafe nearby which will provide a light lunch.

BOFRA Embsay - 18 September 2011

What a finish to the men's championship. This week, none of the two championship contenders secured first place as Chris Birchall of Leeds City beat them both home. Alastair Dunn was second with Ted Mason finishing third. This puts Alastair and Ted on level points with the one race to go at Wasdale. What a race that will be.

Great North Run - 18 September 2011

Brian Hugill completed his first Great North Run and thought that it was a great day with a fabulous atmosphere and great support from the crowds. He was thrilled with his time of 1:46:34. Finishing times for all Wharfedalers were

Michael Griffin 1:36:31
Brian Hugill 1:46:34
Karen Gorman 1:54:00
Diane Broadhead 2:00:09

Sri Chinmoy 24hr Track Race

Madeleine Watson took part in this event, which was held at Tooting over the weekend and involved doing laps on the 400m track. It started at 12 noon on Saturday and finished at 12 noon on the Sunday. In that time, she covered 86 miles which is quite an achievement (both physical and mental). She was 3rd lady and 19th overall.

Three Shires Fell Race - 17 September 2011

We have been waiting for the results for this race, but in the meantime, here is a brief report of the day. It seems that conditions were treacherous underfoot and there were many falls and injuries. It rained most of the way round, but visibility was fairly good. It seems that Jean Powell adapted well to these conditions and had a brilliant run. The Wharfedale finishing order was:

Tamara Hemsley
Paul Lambert
Kirsty Hall
Jean Powell
Jonathan Gibson

The Wharfedale ladies came away with the first team prize, but whether they were actually the first team seems to be in some doubt. All will be revealed when the results are published.

Owl Events - 2011/12

The dark nights are approaching and for enthusiasts of off road running, Kevin Rogan will again be putting on a series of Owl Events. These will be as follows:

Pendle - Starting and finishing at the village hall, Barley
Nab End - Starting and finishing Silsden Park top field
Settle - Starting and finishing Settle market place.
Rombalds - Starting and finishing top of Shortbank Road, Skipton
Simons Seat - Starting and finishing at the Craven Arms, Appletreewick

A headtorch essential and appropriate clothing according to conditions on the night. Night running can be a bit tricky at times so you run entirely at your own risk. No prizes on day, but you can guess your time and the nearest gets a bottle of wine, £1.00 entry on the night. There will be a get together after each race at the nearest pub.

For further details, contact Kevin Rogan at thefellrunner@hotmail.com

Last Pub Run of the Season

Barry Scholes, who put together this year's programme of pub runs, has organised one last run from the Bay Horse at Snaygill. In view of the encroaching nights, it will commence at 6:30 pm.

Barry would like to pass on his thanks to all those who, throughout the summer, have supported this series of social runs.

Whernside - 24 September 2011

Sam Watson finished in 2nd place to lead home a group of Wharfedalers, Nick Charlesworth, David Kirkham and Christian Holmes, who all had a top ten finish.

Rachel Hill, who finished in 63rd place overall was first Wharfedale lady.
