Sue Narey - London Marathon 2012![]() Sue writes; I have managed to gain a ballot place in the 2012 London Marathon. I have decided to run for Help for Heroes and have set up a fundraising page on bmycharity. As it is my second time running the London Marathon I will be aiming to finish within 4 hours, last time I completed it in 4 hours 41 minutes, no pressure! Ian Holmes was lying 2nd at the summit, but he pulled through to once more win this race. Second was James Logue of Calder Valley. Sam Watson was first Wharfedaler in 9th place, with Matthew Athersmith 10th and Dave Kirkham 11th. In the ladies race, Anne Johnson of Calder Valley took the honours and the first lady for for Wharfedale was Louisa Pickles who was 4th lady overall. In the junior races, Logan Hargreaves-Madhas won the U10 race. Josh Newbold was 1st in the U12 race and Harry Muir was 2nd in the U14 race. An exciting finish put James Logue & Lloyd Taggart in joint first place for this race. As might be expected, Calder Valley put in a great
team performance, taking three places out of the top five positions.
First Wharfedaler was U23 Matthew Athersmith in 8th place, followed by Paul Crabtree in 15th place. An outstanding run by Gill Myers made her third Wharfedaler and 35th overall in the race. She was first LV50. Wharfedale were third men's team. Jason Hemsley cycled to the race and was late getting there. The Wharfedale Harriers ladies had a lot of reasons to celebrate at the annual Fell Runners Association Presentation Evening – which took place on Saturday night – at the Pennine Manor Hotel, Huddersfield. Gill Myers performed fantastically in 2011 to retain her English LV50 Championship title. Gill scored maximum points after wins at Whittle Pike (short race), Loughrigg - Silver Howe (Medium race), Sedbergh Hills and Duddon Valley (long races). Gill also finished 3rd in the LV45 Championships and 15th overall. This is only Gill’s second season of taking part in these championships. Judy Howells has had a brilliant year and won her first individual medal – which was bronze in the British LV40 championships. The British championships incorporates races in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Judy was also 7th in the British Ladies Championships overall. Tamara Hemsley also received a prize for 3rd lady in the Lakeland Classics Championships after competing well at Duddon Valley, Borrowdale and the Three Shires fell races. The Wharfedale Ladies team won bronze medals in the English Ladies team championships with Gill Myers, Tamara Hemsley, Judy Howells, Cathy Bradley and Rachel Hill all running strongly to count for the team which consists of the first 3 ladies finishing for the club across short, medium and long distance races which have taken place throughout the year. This is the first time the Wharfedale ladies have won a team medal the English Championships. To top it all off the Wharfedale Harriers Ladies also won bronze medals in the English LV40 team championships with Gill Myers, Judy Howells, Rachel Hill, Madeleine Watson, Caroline Pollard and Val Done all performing well to count for the team and receive their medals. Pre-Christmas Social Run & Supper - 7 December 2011As regular Wednesday off road runners will be aware, the first Wednesday in December for the past four years has been the Pre-Christmas Social Run from Higher Stone Gappe, Lothersdale. Pat & Graham Wadsworth will be once again hosting this event and the run will be led out by Sam Wadsworth. To mitigate some of the cost, there will be a nominal charge of £2.50 for adults and £1.00 for children. This year there will not be a vegetarian option.To get some idea of numbers, it would be helpful, if you would like to come, if you could email Graham Wadsworth or telephone 07976 794749 As always, runners who are currently injured are still welcome for supper. Lucas Payne took part in this race and was cheesed off that he came 8th out of 405 finishers. His excuse was that it was flat and windy.
He was looking for a sub 36 minute time. His actual time was 36:38!

Sam Watson was lying third at the summit, but managed to gain first place at the finish when Steve Brock and Chris Newman took a wrong turn on the way back.Louisa Pickles was first lady finisher in 15th place, just in front of Gill Myers.
