Seven Wharfedalers were up for this challenge including Xavier Chaduc. We do not often see him out on the fells and he certainly picked a tough race to put in an appearance. Kirsty Hall also ran, but doesn't appear in the results, as she turned up on the day for what was a pre-entry race. The organisers did however let her run and gave her a time which would have put her in 209th position. The Wharfedalers finished as follows.
  •   77 Rob Shaw 2:45:29
  • 107 David Ashby 2:57:20
  • 151 Ian Page 3:09:35

Great Whernside - 30 October 2010

Dave Kirkham
Dave Kirkham
(floating through the air on his return)

The early news from this event is that Ian Holmes of Bingley won the race comfortably. He made the steep ascent out of Kettlewell look so easy as he exchanged pleasantries with spectators, whilst at the same time building an early lead. On the return, his lead looked to be huge, although Ted Mason of Wharfedale managed to reduce it to just over a minute at the finish. This may well have been not just due to Ted's prowess on the descent, but also to Ian settling for a steady run in. This was a good run by Ted Mason, who was in about 10th position as he approached the summit. However, using his considerable local knowledge, he took a different line to the main band of runners who had adopted the usual 'follow my leader' approach. This in itself gained him a few places and of course, his renown ability on the descent did the rest. Other Wharfedalers having a good run out and a top ten place, were Nick Charlesworth, who finished in 5th place and Mark McGoldrick who finished 8th.

Cathy Bradley was our first lady home in 84th place. Cathy was nursing an injury which was giving her some discomfort on the descent, so she eased off and as a result, she lost a lot of places. However, she still managed to finish 6th lady overall.

The finishing times and places for all the Wharfedalers are below.
  •     2 Ted Mason 33:45
  •     5 Nick Charlesworth 34:35 V40
  •     8 Mark McGoldrick 35:12
  •   16 Colin Moses 36:15 V 40
  •   23 David Kirkham 37:34
  •   24 David Ashby 38:06 V40
  •   26 Paul Crabtree 38:43 V40
  •   27 Rob Shaw 38:14 V40
  •   30 Graham Bird 39:33 V40
  •   43 Jonathan Gibson 41:19 V40
  •   49 Adam Drury 42:14
  •   52 Ian Page 42:55 V40
  •   57 Barry Scholes 43:54 V50
  •   69 Simon Franklin 44:50 V40
  •   81 John Thompson 46:10 V50
  •   84 Cathy Bradley 46:34 L
  •   94 Xavier Chaduc 47:38 V40

Great Whernside - 30 October 2010

Ian Holmes
Ian Holmes
(On his way to the first of two victories this weekend.)

At Great Whernside, Ian Holmes had built up such a lead that on his return, he found time to stop and chat to the spectators. Then on Sunday, he got up and won the Bronte Way with consummate ease, completing a great weekend double. His undoubted athletic ability is coupled with a smiling friendly disposition and at the moment, he is very much the King of Fell Racing.

The above picture was taken by Andy Holden and a lot more of his superb pictures of the day, showing runners from all clubs, can be found on both links below:

West Yorkshire Cross Country League - 30 October 2010

Many of our youngsters turned out for these races with some quite notable successes. Charlie Lowrie won the U11 boys race outright, with Wharfedale finishing 2nd team. The other outright winner was Emma Spencer, who won the U17 girls race. Wharfedale have a strong team of runners in the U15 age bracket, which was confirmed by them taking the team prize in this category. Thanks to Tamara Hird for the full  results  for all Wharfedalers at this event.

Lakeland Classics Trophy Results

Wharfedale Harriers were conspicuous by their absence in these races and only two Wharfedalers managed to complete at least the 3 races to qualify in the final results. One was Cathy Bradley who did Duddon, Ennerdale and Borrowdale and who came 10th overall Lady and the other was Andy Hirst, who managed 8th MV50, completing all six races for the 5th year in succession.

Wharfedale finished 25th team due to scoring at only one super long race Ennerdale, which was a championship race. Just one more result would have meant that the club would have fared a lot better.

Beachy Head Marathon - 23 October 2010

Phil Done & Logan Hargreaves-Madhas
Phil Done & Logan Hargreaves-Madhas

Tim Done, Raj Madhas and families travelled down to Eastbourne to take on this scenic off-road Marathon. Apart from a threatening downpour just before the start, the weather held up to make perfect conditions for the run. The course is mostly on grassy paths with steady gradients making for some good running. The sting in the tail is the last 8 miles, which although offering beautiful views across to Beachy Head, traverses the Seven Sisters Park and several thousand feet of climb over the rolling cliffs.

Whilst the seniors made their way round the course, taking in the views, Phil Done and Logan Hargreaves-Madhas made their mark for Wharfedale Harriers in the junior races, with Phil winning the 3K (12-16 years) race in 13:19 and 8 year old Logan winning the 2K (8 to 11 years) race in 09:30.

In the end, Tim was thrilled to bits with his time of 4:31:30 and an excellent post race massage. Raj was only 15 minutes behind through most of the checkpoints, but after stopping off for a Saturday buffet lunch at checkpoint 4, he lost a little time to finish comfortably in about 5:30:00. Unfortunately after a long wait for the results, a 'glitch' in their recording meant they will never know their over all positions, which is disappointing after all of the effort. However, it is a race that they would both strongly recommend.
