Otley Chevin Race - Tuesday 2 June 2010![]() We had a good turnout and a lovely evening for the Otley Chevin Race. There were 11 Wharfedalers amongst the 84 runners in the race which was won by Graham Pearce of Pudsey and Bramley in 17:32. Once again, our ladies were the winning team. Times and positions for the club were as follows, photos will be uploaded soon.

Meet at the Elm Street pub (park in the village car park next to the pub) at 7pm. Steady social run of about 60-80mins duration.After-work Social run - Monday 7th June 2010This will be from the White Lion pub, Kildwick at 6pm. Meet in the pub front car-park for a social run over Farnhill moor, probably taking in Bradley and a jog back along the canal. 45-60mins.Killington Sports - Thursday 3 June 2010
A great evening was had at the excellent Killington Sports. Dating back to 1848, this village sports which takes place in a field somewhere up North, provides great entertainment (measured in yards)
and some of the best burgers you will find anywhere. Races go on until it is too dark to see and everyone comes away with a great feeling of satisfaction. Wharfedale had a good turnout as usual
and featured well in both the Mountain bike and fell races. Andy Holden; aka Wharfee, set off steadily and built up speed to come back first in the mountain bike race, scaring a few runners on his
way. He was followed home by Thod Gibson in 2nd.
In the fell race, we had a good share of the prizes, with some outstanding performances on the night. Wharfedale results are as follows:

Web SiteA big thanks to Tim Done, who despite all the other calls on his time, has done a great job in keeping the web site up to date whilst Pat and myself enjoyed a trip to Italy. Thanks Tim.Graham Wadsworth Duddon Fell Race - 5 June 2010
A couple of Wharfedalers took part in this Lakeland Classic. Cathy Bradley has sent in the following brief report:
Just myself and Andy 'mountain man' Hirst entered this, the 'tamer' of the superlong Lakeland classics. At 20 miles and 6000" it is one not to be taken light heartedly though. A superb route taking in a quieter area of the Lakes, and fantastic views of the Scafell Range (or was that just to take my mind off the beast of a climb up Little Stand!). After cooling down in the stream, a field of about 200 runners set off in blistering heat (apparently similar conditions to last year). The first half to Three Shires Stones seemed to go really fast and feeling good, I picked up my hidden supplies and set off up to Swirl How Summit. From here to the end (about 8 miles I think) is a total blur and was just a case of keeping going at what seemed a snail pace! The heat definately took its toll as I dropped back by about 4 minutes off my scheduled time. This is a great race and what which I will do again - maybe in cooler conditions... After falling off his ladder last week, Kieron opted for the half Duddon - 9 miles and 3000' - finishing in 32nd and in 2hr 29. Results

Please see the flyer below for details.Sutton Pinnacles Fell Race Blencathra Fell Race - 2 June 2010
As a fell race, this one has it all. It is a lovely setting, it is a very challenging race and it is always well organised by Eden Runners. Chris Newman took the honours for Wharfedale, finishing in 6th place but only just ahead of Sam Watson who was close behind him. This year saw Paul Harlowe have a go at this race and he had a good run to finish in 34th place. It was also nice to see two of our juniors take part and they too, both put in good performances. The finishing positions of all Wharfedalers were as follows:
Duddon Fell Race - 5 June 2010

Weets Fell Race - Wednesday 16 June 2010Race organiser Kevin Rogan could do with a bit more assistance with this event and if you are free and able to help, please contact Kevin on 07971 645040Harrogate Childline Triathlon - 12 June 2010
For Logan Hargreaves-Madhas, this was his first triathlon. He swam, cycled and ran against boys older than himself. He finished
somewhere in the middle of the field, after completing the third fastest run of the day. Not bad for an eight year old.
It does not seem that long since 2009 World Triathlon Champion, Alistair Brownlee, was a promising youngster, putting in some good performances at local events. Perhaps we have another World Champion in the making here. Not only did young Logan put in a good performance but when he got home, he wrote an account of the day for the web site. There were lots of Wharfedalers, both seniors and juniors in this event and they finished as follows:
Hebden Bridge Fell Race - 10 June 2010

Ennerdale Horseshoe - 12 June 2010
As this is one of the classic Lakeland races, you could be fairly certain that Andy Hirst would be there. He was joined by Simon
Franklin and as it was a championship race, by six of our ladies.
There are two contrasting reports of the day. One from Tamara Hird and one from Simon Franklin, which he describes as "a view from the back". They are accessible from the links below Tamara's Report Simon's Report The finishing times and positions of the Wharfedalers were:
After Work Social Run - Monday 21 June 2010Please note that this will take place from the Bay Horse at Snaygill. Be ready for a 6:00 pm start.Weets Fell Race - 16 June 2010Sam Watson Wins His First Senior Race![]() Some good runners entered this race and competition within the top five was tough. Daniel Chan had come all the way over from Liverpool for the race and he must have fancied his chances of winning it. He certainly looked very strong on the way out. Top female runner, Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley Harriers also turned up and the conjecture amongst the spectators hinged on whether she too might win the race outright. Then of course, there was Andy Brown of Clayton, also a formidable opponent. Against this background, Sam Watson set off. He managed to keep in touch with the front runners and on the return, he was lying second behind Daniel Chan as they were ascending the road. At this point, he decided to make his move and he passed Daniel, taking a 20 metre lead. He maintained this lead across the moor right up to the gate where the road leads down to the finish. At this point, the winning post beckoned and he forced his tired body onwards, only to hear Daniel Chan, hot on his heels and closing the gap. With gritty determination, Sam held on, taking his first senior race win, something he has been threatening to do for some time. Shortly after these two came home, another two figures appeared on the lane. The leading one was Victoria Wilkinson and she finished just ahead of Andy Brown of Clayton. Victoria is a superb athlete and, as she showed in this race, she is more than capable of mixing it with her male opponents and on another day, she might have won this race outright. Shortly after these two finished, first V40 Nick Charlesworth came home. Just outside the top ten, Wharfedale junior Ben Johnstone had an outstanding run to finish in 12th place. There were too many Wharfedalers in this race to mention individually, but the full results are available from the link below. Weets Race Results After Work Social Run - Monday 21 June 2010Please note that this will take place from the Bay Horse at Snaygill. Be ready for a 6:00 pm start.Buckden Pike Fell Race - 19 June 2010
More pictures of the day can be found at: Buckden Pike Race Pictures A cloudy but otherwise fine day saw 138 runners gather to do battle on "The Pike". Graham Pearce set off as if he was determined to win the race and this proved to be the case. When most farmers were just getting up, local farmer and Wharfedale member Ted Mason retired to bed after attending the rugby club dinner. However, this did not stop him putting in a good performance to finish in second place, ahead of Tom Brunt of Holmfirth. In the ladies race, last year's winner Lisa Lacon did not seem to be at her best and she was beaten to the finish line by team mate Helen Berry. It was good to see a few juniors take on this race and they were led home by Tom Sessford of Keighley & Craven, followed by Scott Baistow who had a good run and obviously enjoyed this race. The local mountain rescue team had once more to be called upon, this year to help Will Marshall back to the start, as during the race, he aggravated an injury to his foot, which was incurred on the previous Thursday at school. A subsequent x-ray revealed a slight crack in one of the bones in his heel, as well as some muscle and tissue damage, but nothing that time and a short lay off from running will not mend. The race was completed by two vet 70s, with Norman Bush of Ilkley finishing in the top half of the field, in a remarkable 58th position. Amongst the Wharfedalers, Jean Powell put in a good performance to finish 2nd FV40. The first male team was Wharfedale Harriers and first ladies team was Holmfirth. The results are at: Buckden Pike Race Results Buckden Pike Fell Race - 19 June 2010![]() Clougha Pike Fell Race - 19 June 2010![]() The Wharfedale Juniors did well in these junior championship races, with James Hall and Josh Newbold taking first places and our Under 10s and Under 14s taking the team prize. It has been organised by BOFRA legend and international athlete Mick Hawkins, as part of the Nidderdale Horse show, which takes place at Bewerley Park showground. Any profits will be used to support Nidderdale School. The senior race is a typical BOFRA style race, about 3 miles long, involving mixed terrain and some steep climbs. There is a full schedule of races from under 9's upwards and covering the usual BOFRA categories. Junior Races start at 10:00 am. Seniors run at 1:00 pm. It is always a challenge to set a new race, so it would be great if some Wharfedalers went along and had a go. This year, a junior race has been added and it was won by Emile Cairess of Bingley Harriers. He was described on their web site
as having blasted round the course. Well the same description must also apply to John Lockwood of Wharfedale, who pushed him all
the way and finished a close second and way ahead of the rest of the field.
Wharfedale had another second place on the day with Gareth Hird having a fine run to finish behind race winner Tom Adams of Ilkley. The finishing positions and times for all the Wharfedalers were as follows:
