Overall Race Winner

This is a new race and it is a bonny course leading from the showfield up through fields and woods, to the monument on the moor top. Wharfedale Harriers had a clean sweep of each class, except for the U17s where no Wharfedalers entered.

The day started well when young Jonathan Gill romped round the course to easily win this race.

Ellamae Gibson suffered yesterday at Kirkby, where a problem with her shoulder seriously impeded her performance. However, in this race, she came back with a vengeance. Not only was she first girl, but she won the race outright and beat everyone with a gritty performance that was full of determination. It seems that Jonathan Gill did not find the U9s race taxing enough, as he also entered this race and finished 6th.

Next came the U14s and Will Smith and Alex Speight took the first two places.

When Will Smith is on form, it is difficult to find the superlatives to describe him. Having won the U14s race, he decided to have a go in the senior race and he won that also! Quite an incredible performance. That takes his tally to three race victories this weekend. Team mate Alex Speight also decided to give it a go and although he was in 12th position at the summit, he suffered on the descent and finished in 31st place Our other male representative, George Carman finished 5th.

Another Wharfedaler finding her form at the moment is Jean Powell. Having finished first lady yesterday at Kirkby, she turned out again at this race and finished first lady once more this weekend.

Some provisional results will be posted shortly and maybe a few pictures will be added to the gallery.

Kirkby Gala - 3 July 2010

Jack Smith had a cracking run in this race to finish second behind Brendon Taylor, but ahead of Ted Mason in third place. Also up amongst the leaders, Jonny Bradshaw finished 5th and Paul Crabtree seems to be getting his old form back by finishing in 6th place.

Jean Powell followed up her good run at Buckden Pike by finishing first lady. Lynn Whittaker also enjoyed a good run on the day to finish 2nd lady.

There were lots of good performances from the Wharfedale juniors as follows:
    U17
  •   1 James Hall 18:36
  •   4 Declan Bulmer 20:46
  •   6 Emma Spencer 21:11 2nd Girl
  •   9 David Wilson 25:23

Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon
3 - 4 July 2010

Richard Wadsworth has hardly been out on the fells for many years and James Feddo was only introduced to fell running during last Winter's Owl Events. However, they both fancied the challenge of this event. Day one saw them finish in 4th place, with their times improving as the day progressed. Day two saw a similar performance, this time with their times matching the leaders, towards the end. They didn't quite do enough to secure 2nd place, but they were delighted with their 3rd place finish. Expect to see these two out on the fells again soon, probably in some of the Lakeland races.

In a different class, Saunders stalwarts, Sam Wadsworth & Kirsty Hall pulled out on the second day and did not finish. Kirsty had not been feeling her best last week and it was just too much for her on the second day. No doubt they will be back again next year.

Danefield Relay 30 June 2010

The Wharfedale Harriers Vets team finished 10th overall and second Vets team in 61.04 and consisted of Paul Crabtree (20.54), Jason Hemsley (20.34) and Nick Charlesworth (19.36).

The Wharfedale Ladies team of Louisa Pickles (23.49), Kirsty Hall (24.52) and Tamara Hird finished 25th and 3rd ladies team just 32 seconds behind Otley AC Ladies - the winners were Bingley Harriers. The second Wharfedale Ladies team also had a good run and finished in 44th place and consisted of Gretel Edwards (30.32), Sarah Martin (27.29) and Sally Bisset (28.03).

Other Wharfedalers Gill Myers, Rohan Akers and Lisa McKevitt - also had good runs in different teams!

Wasdale Fell Race - 10 July 2010

Sam Watson Andy Hirst
Sam Watson Andy Hirst

Conditions for this race were thick mist, high winds and rain. Imagine being out in that for over 5 hours. Cathy Bradley decided to not to bother starting the race - quite rightly. As for Sam Watson, he has gone from Top Dog to Ironman. He completed the course in just under five hours and finished around 15th place. Andy Hirst, of course, took all this in his stride, finishing in around six hours. Another Wharfedaler, Simon Franklin also had a go, but dropped out, as he would have been timed out at Great Gable anyway. Read his account of the day from the link below.

Gargrave Cross Country - 21 July 2010

Will Smith Emma Spencer
Will Smith Emma Spencer

The senior and under 17 results are now in and were dominated by the Wharfedale youngsters. Gareth Hird won the race, ahead of Stuart Brown of Keighley & Craven, knocking almost one and a half minutes off his winning time of last year. Third place was Jonathan Bradshaw, who also beat last year's winning time.

In 8th position was Will Smith and first Under 17. He had already won his own age group race which is the U14s. What would he have done if he had just saved himself for the senior race? Another remarkable performance from a talented young man.

And then the first lady came home. Not a senior, but junior international Emma Spencer who finished ahead of senior lady Tamara Hird, herself no slouch in this type of race. Again, a remarkable performance.

Wharfeego was out and about on the course with his SLR and a few of his top quality pictures will shortly be available in the gallery.

After Work Social Run - Monday 26th July

This weeks after-work run will be from Cowling, and will either be a gentle run up to Wolf Stones, or, depending upon attendee preference, a recce of the Cowling Gala Fell Race (which is on Saturday 31st, 4pm). Either case, meet up at Neil's place, 18 Acre Road, Cowling BD22 0FN for a 6pm start.

Harrogate 10K - 25 July 2010

Well, who would have thought it? Will Marshall has taken part in a road race. He has sent in a report of the day and seems a little disappointed with his performance. To come 16th out of 611 finishers, given his age and his lack of experience in road races, would sound pretty good to most people.

Full results are in the results section.

BOFRA Cracoe fell Race - 15 July 2010

Charlie Lowrie & Josh Newbold Ellie Lambert
Charlie Lowrie & Josh Newbold Ellie Lambert

Many years ago, 1993 to be precise, Andy Holden aka Wharfeego won this race. To commemorate this victory, he has kindly donated a trophy which will, from now on, go to the race winner. This year it goes to Ted Mason, but he had to battle for it with Sam Watson, who actually tried to pass him on the descent. Amongst our ladies, Jean Powell showed how she is taking to the sport by once more finishing first LV40. The under 12's saw one of the closest races this season, with Josh Newbold shadowing Charlie Lowrie for the whole of the race, but Charlie showed his current form by taking first place by just 2 seconds to win his 8th race and seal the 2010 U12 championship. Tim Done has written an excellent report of the day available from the link below.

Cowling Fell Race - 31 July 2010

Only anecdotal details of this race, at the moment. The word is that Nick Charlesworth secured 2nd place behind Billy Pinder and Kirsty Hall also secured 2nd place in the ladies race, with Lynn finishing a brilliant 3rd! Neil Taylor was 2nd V50, or 3rd V40. Our juniors once again dominated with Phil Done winning the U14s and James Hall and Ben Johnstone coming very highly placed in the seniors race. Possibly there was another junior who gave Wharfedale a 1-2-3 in the U17s.

Further details follow shortly.

Dollar Fell Race - 31 July 2010

Three of the ladies went up for this race which was over 9.4 miles with 3150 ft of ascent. Wharfedale were 4th team with Gill Myers continuing with her new lease of life and leading the team home. She was also first LV50. The team positions were:
