Rylstone Cross Owl Event - 13 January 2010
There was heavy snow on the tops, it was a miserably cold night with a slight touch of snow
in the wind and it was just the night to stop in by the fire. You could be forgiven for thinking that
only a hand full of people would bother venturing out to take on a run from Embsay to Rylstone Cross and back,
in the dark. But fell runners are made of sterner stuff and twenty one hardy soles decided to give it a go, including
two ladies and two juniors. Sam Watson assisted everyone by gashing both legs and laying a trail of blood in the
snow for everyone to follow. Jack Smith loves these night events and showed this by coming third.
There was the usual guess your time competition and most runners were wildly optimistic.
Only Mark Nutter of Clayton seemed to sense that it was going to be really tough on the tops and his guess of 1 Hour, 40
minutes, was only just over one minute away from his actual time. As he said afterwards, "It shows how tough it was,
as on a summer's day, you could have walked it in that time". Another good winter evening out on the fells.
This will be from the Fanny Grey at Salterforth. Meet at 6:45 pm for 7:00 pm start.
Pennine Bridleway - Sunday 31 January 2010
Please note that after this event, there will be a post race social get together in the Kings Arms, Silsden,

7 to 8 hours. If you would like to pair up with Raj, please contact him on 077 222 44 003, or email

Kendal Winter League, Firbank - 17 January 2010
James Hall
Due to the weather, this was the first race in this year's league and our juniors certainly got off
to a good start. In the U12 boys race, Lloyd Davies, Charlie Lowrie and Josh Newbold took the first
three places and Ella Mae Gibson was 3rd U12 girl. In the U14s, the winner was Wharfedale's James Hall.
In the senior race, the men were led home by club champion Jonathan Gibson, who finished in 20th place.
Val Done sustained an injury in the race after an over enthusiastic jump into the stream. She was helped
off the fell by Raj Madhas and Tim Thom. She was taken to Airedale hospital and thankfully, nothing was broken,
but she has torn the ligaments in her ankle and will be on crutches for a week. It was a shame as apparently, up to that point,
she was going quite well and was only 50 yards behind her husband Tim.

Last year, Wharfedale Harriers entered this event for the first time, fielding two teams, one of which was
a ladies team. This year, Wharfedale entered three teams. The A team finished in 7th place, an improvement
of 3 places on last year and the ladies team finished in 61st place, an improvement of 8 places on last
year. The 3rd team was a mixed team and finished just ahead of the ladies team in 59th place.

Kendal Winter League, Whitestones - 24 January 2010
At last, the results are out for this race and reveal cracking performances from Chris Newman and Kate Rogan.
Chris was second overall, behind Mike Robinson of Dark Peak, whilst Kate was second lady behind Carol Evans of Settle.
The U12 race saw a very close finish with Wharfedale's Josh Newbold just beating everyone to the line
to take the honours.
In the U14s race, James Hall ran out the winner, just ahead of Ben Johnstone. The battle between these two
team mates was such that they opened up a good lead on the chasing pack.

North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championship 30 January 2010
Will Smith
Will Marshall
We are used to seeing our juniors out competing on the fells and many of them are also a vital part of their school's
cross country teams. Some are so good that they have been selected to represent the district and from these,
runners will be selected to represent North Yorkshire in the "Nationals". In the senior boys, Will Marshall,
running a year under age, beat some serious competition to finish 7th. In the junior boys race, Will Smith won it outright,
with Ben Johnstone finishing 8th. Sadly, Alex Speight did not finish the race having sustained an achilles injury.
In the year 7 boys, Ollie Whyte finished 15th.
The top 6 get selected to run for North Yorkshire Schools at the Nationals on 20 March. The top 12 are selected to run
for North Yorkshire Schools at the Northern intercounties next week at Durham, where the two remaining team places for
the Nationals will be decided.
A few more of the pictures taken by Tim Done are in the gallery.
Night Events
As many will be aware, a series of night events takes place in the winter months for those who enjoy off road running.
The popularity of these events has been such that this year, a "league table" has been produced on a similar basis to
the Kendal Winter League. This can be viewed from the link below:
