Cray Fell Race - 8 August 2010

Ted Mason Jean Powell
Ted Mason Jean Powell

This a lovely low key race and is one that retains some of the atmosphere of early fell races that were held in the Dales villages. In the senior race, Ted Mason won it again. He has won this race in each of the last four years.

In the ladies race, Jean Powell took the honours, being the first lady and first LV40.

Ben Johnstone
Ben Johnstone

In the junior races, the ever improving Declan Bulmer had a good run to finish second in the U17s. In the U14s, where Wharfedale are very strong, the first three places went to Ben Johnstone, Callum Lambert and Alex Speight respectively. The under 12s saw Ellie Lambert finish first girl with Ellamae Gibson third girl. Finally, in the U9s, Jack Muir won the race with Sam Johnstone, another fell runner from the Johnstone production line, finishing in third place.

Thanks to Lynn Whittaker, the full results are now in the results section.

Pete Keron's American Bike Ride

Pete Keron
Pete Keron

For his summer holiday this year, Pete Keron planned to cycle from Seattle to Atlanta in the USA between the 24th July and the 30th August. Excluding flying time that's 36 days to cycle around 3500 miles. Which is almost 100 miles a day. He would have no doubt undertaken this challenge anyway, but he has taken the opportunity to use it to also raise money for charity. Below is his report of progress so far.

So far I've ridden 1700 miles and done nearly 15 vertical miles of climbing, crossed 6 states, a time zone and the continental divide 8 times. Despite all this, my legs still don't feel as bad as when I did the Ben! Thanks to all of you who have sponsored me already and if you would like to do so please go to www.justgiving.com/peter-keron

See you in 4 weeks!

Borrowdale Fell Race - 7 August 2010

Ten Wharfedalers went up to the Lakes for this race which was run in a mixed bag of weather. The majority of it was in rain and clag, with no views from the top of Scafell Pike and Great Gable. However, the last few miles were in glorious sunshine. Colin Moses was first Wharfedaler and it was nip and tuck between Gill Myers and Cathy Bradley for first female Wharfedaler to finish. The full positions and finishing times for all Wharfedalers were as follows:
  •   34 Colin Moses 3:37:59
  •   53 Nicholas Charlesworth 3:46:10
  •   82 Christian Holmes 3:59:37
  • 111 Mark McGoldrick 4:13:25
  • 120 Robert Shaw 4:17:56
  • 121 David Ashby 4:17:56
  • 191 Andrew Hirst 4:38:33
  • 252 Gill Myers 4:56:15
  • 253 Catherine Bradley 4:56:15
  • 260 Judy Howells 4:59:04

Hellifield Gala - 7 August 2010

Incorporating the Yorkshire Junior Championships

Hellifield Gala Fell Race
Start of the U18 and Senior Race

The Wharfedale juniors were up against the best in the county but came away with medals as follows:

U12s
Gold
Ellie Lambert
Silver Charlie Lowrie

U14s
Silver
James Hall
Bronze Will Smith

U16
Bronze
Declan Bulmer

U23

Matthew Athersmith

In the U10s, Robbie Johnstone was second and Logan Hargreaves-Madhas was third.

Whittle Pike - 4 August 2010

A couple of seniors went over for this mid week run. Gill Myers in 35th position overall was 2nd lady and 1st LV50. The other Wharfedaler, John Thompson finished in 58th position. Three juniors also went to this race and young Logan has written a report as follow:

I love racing at Whittle Pike because the course is really steep. For the last 2 years I have come first in the U8's, but now I am in the U10's and hoped that I would do as well as I had in the past. I was pleased with my run and finished in 2nd place. The course was well marked for most ages but some of the U14's (including Odin) got lost and ended up doing the U16's course. The only other Wharfedale junior there was Lloyd Davis who won the U12's.

Logan Hargreaves-Madhas

Pub Run - Wednesday 18 August 2010

Please note that this will be from Hellifield. Meet at the back of Hellifield House (the old Working Men's Club) ready for a 7:00 pm start.

Arncliffe Gala - 14 August 2010

Ben Johnstone
Ben Johnstone - 1st U14

As often seems to happen in these Dales village races, there was a battle for first place between Ted Mason & Mike Fanning, with the younger man making it to to the winning post first. Mark McGoldrick was third man. First lady was the talented Melanie Hyder with Judy Howells the second lady.

There are no details of the junior races, but the word is that Ben Johnstone won the U14 race and that Zoe Baistow was third in her race, which was presumably the U14 girls.

Full details are in the results section.

Sierre - Zinal Mountain Race - 8 August 2010

The Hird family went off to Switzerland and along with a few juniors, took part in this race. Tamara has written a report of the day.

Ben Johnstone

Only anecdotal information about this event - nothing official. The word is that young Ben Johnstone just beat James Hall in the U17s with a dive over the line! The word is also that Wharfedalers won every category apart from the senior ladies. It seems that Ted Mason won the senior race after taking part in the drystone walling competition. Halton Gill - 29 August 2010

It was a lovely sunny day for these races and once more Ben Johnstone was on form, being the overall race winner and first U17. James Hall, another U17, was second overall with Declan Bulmer, the third Wharfedale U17, finishing fourth overall. Cathy Bradley was first lady. We have no note of the results for the junior races, but the U17s and seniors finished as follows:

Grasmere Sports

The official results are not yet available, but results of some sort are now on the Wharfedale website. They are made up from the results available on the day and they do contain some obvious errors and will obviously be subject to some revision. •   9 Scott Baistow 13:05
  • 12 Nicole Narey 14:35 2nd Girl
