Coniston Fell Race - 2 May 2009
There were some good results all round for the Wharfedalers today and everyone seemed to put in a good performance. The race was won by Ian Holmes in 1:09:42 First Wharfedaler home was Colin Moses who had a good run to come home just ahead Mark McGoldrick, who is getting back to form this season. Keiran Ashworth had a bad fall near the end and banged his head and came home covered in blood. Hopefully, it looked worse that what is actually was. Full results and maybe a few pics will be posted shortly. In the meantime, the times and positions of the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Knokke 10K - 1 May 2009
Friday was a Labour Day Bank Holiday in Belgium and Tim Stedman and his fiancee went to Knokke, a seaside resort on the English Channel, to do a 10K. It was ultra flat and ultra fast and there were only 2 bumps in it, so it was not quite like a fell race. However, Tim finished in 27th place with a time of 34:50, which was a PB, and Hannah came 80th in 48:48, which was also a PB. It was very warm and sunny, with a nice atmosphere and there was a waffle and ice cream and chocolate sauce afterwards. Full results for both races are no in the results section. Coiners Fell Race - 4 May 2009
We had two runners out in the main race and several runners in the junior races. The results from the junior races are only anecdotal at the moment, pending the official results coming out, so they may be subject to confirmation. Jonathan Bradshaw came 4th in the U18s and this may be enough to secure him another international team place. In the U16s, Will Marshall was around 10th place and Will Smith came 4th in the U14s. It is believed that Charlie Lowrie was 3rd in his race. That is the only information we have at the moment and it is all subject to confirmation. In the seniors the times and places of the Wharfedalers were as follows:
The Wharfedaler - May Edition
It is good, it is informative, it is up to date. Will Marshall has once more been very busy, so find out what has been going
on up t' Dale and download the May edition now.
The May Wharfedaler Stuc a'Chroin - 2 May 2009![]() We had a ladies team out in this event and they came 6th team overall. Tamara Hird sent in a report of the day which is available from the link below. Read Tamara's Report Full results are in the results section. Bunny Run Relay - 5 May 2009
The weather for this event was absolutely dreadful with strong winds and rain. Every runner did the same lap of about
2 miles. There were all sorts of mixed teams, but one that was easily identifiable was the Wharfedale team of
Jack Smith, Jonathan Bradshaw and Bruce Elsworth.
Jack ran the first leg and set off at a good pace, but like everyone else, he struggled going up the hill into the driving wind and rain. However, he finished in third place. Jonathan took over and quickly passed the second place runner, who to be fair, was not looking very strong. Going up the hill and into the wind, he started to close the gap with the leader. He may have put too much effort into that part of the race, for when they came back into view, the gap had widened again to what it was originally. Last leg and Bruce set off worrying about scrambling the egg. Trust a chef to think like that. He started to close the gap on the leader and on the run back down to the finish, he was still closing the gap, but there was too much for him to do and the team ran out in second place to some good opposition, whoever they were. There is no information about how the other Wharfedalers fared at the moment. There are no photographs either, although Andy Smith was jogging about with camera in hand, so there might be a few later. Coiners Junior Races - 5 May 2009
David Hird's flair for encouraging and bringing on junior runners was perhaps illustrated by the number of junior Wharfedalers
who attended these races - thirteen in total. Not only that, but Jonathan Bradshaw may have done enough to gain an England vest. David took
a lot of photographs of the day which we are trying to get on to a Picasa album and hopefully, these will appear shortly.
In the meantime, the achievements of our youngsters were as follows: Under 8
Pendle Cloughs Race - Saturday 9 May 2009This coming weekend is the second running of this race. Everything is pretty well much in place, but Andy could do with a sweeper for the section between CP6 Ashendean to CP9 road crossing. If anyone fancies a gentle jog out on Saturday afternoon, please contact Andy Hirst on 01282 812701 or email andrewhirst05@tiscali.co.uk, as he would appreciate your assistance.Three Peaks Race - 25 April 2009

Lothersdale Fell Race - 6 May 2009Jack Smith Wins Again![]() At the summit Ted Mason was leading, with Jack Smith in second place and Pete Keron third. However, on the descent Jack took the lead and ran out the winner with a 25 second lead over the field.Ted finished in second place, with Steve Brock of Keighley third. We had four Wharfedalers in the top ten and it was good to see Marcus Rae racing again after being absent for a little while. It was also good to see another new member Jim Webb out in a race and hopefully, we will see more of Jim in the future. Caw Fell Race- 6 May 2009
Kirsty Hall made this her first come back race after injury. She sent in a report of the night and is available from the link below.
Read Kirsty's Report Yorkshire Veteran Athletic AssociationA message from Paul Harlowe"This is a reminder to any of our vets that we still have club affiliation to the Yorkshire Veteran Athletic Association (veteran means lads and lasses over 35 in 5 year age bands). Whilst there has been little interest in the past, especially with the Bofra season imminent, several new vets have arrived on the scene, some of whom may wish to enter some of the grand prix races that award points towards league positions and individual awards. There are also championship races at most road distances and early in 2010 a xc race. A new feature this year is a XC relay (4x2 miles) as part of the Cutler relays in October. It would be fantastic for us to send some teams. Early days I know, so a reminder will be made nearer the time. Anyone interested can find full details on the vets web site at www.yvaa.org. There is also a also a permanent link on the links page.". Pendle Cloughs Results Pendle Cloughs Split Times (Also available in pdf and excel from results section). Pete Jackson's Race Report Picasa Race Photo Album Andy Hirst's Picture Gallery A reasonably bright morning greeted the increased numbers for this challenging race, but towards the end widespread showers developed. The decision to hold the race in May was definitely an improvement on ast year, when it was run in the middle of summer, and in the cooler conditions, most people improved on their previous times. The race was won by Tom Brunt of Holmfirth in a time of 2:16:36, followed by Alan Life and Andy Brown, both of Clayton. In his first run in this race, Tom had no problem navigating himself round and he led right from the start, only slowing down towards the end when victory was assured. First lady home was Jo Buckley of Calder Valley in a time of 2:44:24, followed by Carol Life of Clayton and Helen Hodgkinson of Todmorden. This was also Jo's first attempt at this race and again she had no difficulty finding her way about whilst maintaining a good time. Pete Jackson was one of only three Wharfealers to compete in this race. Not only did he turn up to run, but he was out at the crack of dawn helping to flag the course and he stopped on afterwards to help Andy to clear up. He sent in a report of the day available from the link above. Full results are available from the link below in web format. They are also available in the results section in pdf format and for those who like to really analyse the numbers, in excel format. Split times will be available shortly and maybe also a few photographs from the day. Pub Run - Wednesday 13 May 2009This will be from Settle. Meet in the town centre by the Town Hall at 6:45 pm for 7:00 pm start. If anyone doesn't want to run, after having taken part in the Jack Bloor or the Mearley Clough race the day before, Andy Holden will lead an off road bike ride around the Settle Loop. It will be around 10 miles. After Work Social Run - Monday 11 May 2009This will be from Tarn House at Stirton. Sets off at 6:00 pm.Fred Witton Challenge - 10 May 2009
Jason Hemsley took part in this year's Fred Witton Challenge, a 112 mile bike ride round the Lake District
taking in all six main passes. He has sent in a report of the day, available below.
Jason's Report Mytholmroyd Fell Race - 10 May 2009
Six Wharfedalers went over for this event. Bruce Elsworth seems to be getting back to form after the Three Peaks race
and he finished in 2nd place. Our other top ten finisher was Colin Moses. It would appear that Adam Baker enjoyed beating
Kevin Rogan and he sent in a report of the day, available from the link below. The finishing times and positions for the
Wharfedalers were as follows:
Belmont Winter Hill - 9 May 2009
A couple of Wharfedalers went over for this race and finished as follows:
Buttermere Sailbeck - 10 May 2009
Only very brief details of this event at the moment which are as follows:
Mearley Clough - 12 May 2009Jack Smith Does It Again![]() What can you say about Jack? The results say it all. Three race wins in three weeks, this time adding his name to some illustrious names that grace the Mearley Clough Trophy. Not only did Jack win this race, but he won it in style and in the run back down the fields towards the finish, his lead was such that he was unassailable. The evening was in fact very good for our younger members. Not only did Jack win the race, but Ben Johnstone came 8th and Scott Baistow finished 54th. The net result was that Wharfedale had the first three under 18 finishers. Our other top ten finisher was Paul Carman. Further down the field, Keiran managed to fall again, but this time with less dramatic consequences than at Coniston and although Andy Holden is shown as finishing last Wharfedaler, he spent most of his time taking video footage. The finishing times and positions for the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Braithwaite Special School, Keighley
This school is trying to raise funds for equipment and has asked for our help. Please see note below from Tamara Hird.
Braithwaite School Appeal Pinhaw Moor - 8 May 2009
Another race to the top of Pinhaw and this time from Earby, although this is more like a trail race than a fell race.
First Wharfedaler to the top was Kirt Livesey who always keeps himself fit. Further down the field, it was good to see Scott having another
"proper" race and Paul Wilson putting on his Wharfedale vest. The finishing positions and times for the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Buttermere Sailbeck - 10 May 2009
Some people get very pedantic about sharing photographs, but not so Steve Hebblethwaite of Keswick AC. He kindly forwarded the above pics for us to use as we wish. Thanks to Steve for sharing these with us and giving us a visual record of the day. If time allows, they may appear in the gallery later. Pink Hoodies
Just a note to remind our female members that pink hoodies are available from Pro-Sport at Skipton (opposite Bizzie Lizzies) who will print them up for the bargain price of £20, the same as the navy blue ones. Sedbergh Gala - 29 May 1999
With the opening of the BOFRA season this coming Saturday, it is perhaps quite interesting to look back a decade
to this event ten years ago and to the early days of Wharfedale Harriers. Barry Scholes has kindly sent an article from the BOFRA Guides
Book, which shows how it was ten years ago. There is no mention of any of the clubs, as ten years ago, competitors ran as
individuals and not as members of a club. However, there were quite a few Wharfedalers there, some of whom are sadly no longer running.
Notable of these is Karen Slater, who, as the article says, won with " a brilliant time". How lovely it would be to turn the clock back
and see Karen at her best again. Still, that is all in the past and let us hope that the present generation also give us good memories to
look back on. Looking at the present talent that is on display, there should be some good memories still to be made.
![]() Jack Bloor - 12 May 2009
For his first attempt at this race, young Jonathan Bradshaw certainly made his mark. Out of 232 starters, he finished in 7th
place behind some very good runners.
In the junior races, Alex Speight had a good run to finish 2nd in the U14s behind James Hall. Full results are now in the results section. WMRA International Youth Mountain Running Challenge
