Wharfedale Harriers had 2 ladies teams and 2 mens teams in this event. The Mens Team of Lucas Payne, Sam Watson and Gareth Hird finished 5th,
followed by Peter Keron, Jason Hemsley and Marcus Rae in about 8th position. The first ladies team of Joanne Middleton, Judy Howells and Tamara Hird
also finished fifth ladies team and not far behind were the second Wharfedale ladies team of Louise Pickles, Vicky Rae and Angela Grey.
I might send a better report when the results are available - depending on how long this takes. The first mens team was Pudsey and Bramley and the
first ladies team were Bingley Harriers.
Kirkby Fell Race - All Our Yesterdays
With this race coming up this weekend, it is perhaps interesting to once more go back into the archives to have
a look at what happened ten years ago. Below is the race report together with a report from the Sharphaw race. The results
are also available for viewing.
A proud dad shows off the new arrival to the world.
Kirkby Gala - 4 July 2009
A quick glance through the results shows even more new faces sporting a Wharfedale shirt. The club had 29 runners out on the day,
made up of 12 seniors and 17 juniors and this appears to be far more than any other club. The fact that we are continuing to attract
more youngsters is not only good for the club, but it will also be beneficial to the youngsters themselves as the competition between
them will mean that "they will bring each other along".
With such a large number of runners, it is impossible to mention each individual by name, but the notable performances were that Ellamae Gibson
was the first girl in the U12s and Jonathan Bradshaw, fresh back from his International in Germany, held off Tom Doyle and Tom Sessford
to win the U17s race. The juniors had several second places too. Will Smith was 2nd in the U14s boys race, Nicole Narey was 2nd in the U14 girls
and Lloyd Davies was 2nd in the U12 boys. In the U9s, Robbie Johnstone was 2nd boy and Lucy Horrocks was 2nd girl.
Thanks to sterling work by BOFRA webmaster Tim Done, the full results are now in the results section.

The 2009 British Fell & Hill Relay will be based at The Leaps, Kirkland, nr. Ennerdale, West Cumbria. The Fells are on the fringe

The rolling grassy fells are of unspoilt beauty and make a perfect setting for the Relay. The terrain is not rugged, thus the running
will be fast and not too technical. By contrast the Orienteering leg will be a tester!

Bofra Alva Games - 11 July 2009
This weekend sees a Bofra race taking place north of the border and once more Barry Scholes has kindly sent in the report and results
of ten years ago. So either re live your memories, or for the youngsters, check up to see if the "old uns" were quite as good
as they made out, when they were younger.
There were quite a few good runners at this race, including a lot from the local clubs. Ricky Lightfoot put in another of his
sterling performances to win the race with more than a two minute lead over second man, Nick Sharp of Ambleside.
Against this background, the three Wharfedalers who went up to the Lakes for this 9m/2700 ft race did very well.
Sam Watson seems to be showing no ill effects from his injury at Weets, Cathy Bradley seems to be thriving on longer
distance fell races and there are no reports of Keiron falling over.
The finishing times and positions of the Wharfedalers were as follows:
16 Sam Watson 1:21:18
95 Cathy Bradley 1:41:54
114 Keiron Ashworth 1:46:35
Stirton Fell Race - 8 July 2009
Charlie Lowrie
Sam Johnstone
Logan Hargreaves-Madhas
Oliver Whyte
Goldie, Watto, Will Marshall & Gareth Hird
There were a lot of good performances from our seniors as the results show. The junior results are still awaited
and so the information below maybe be subject to correction, once they are available.
It appears that Logan Madhas-Hargreaves won the U8s. Sam Johnstone also looked to be going well, followed by Tommy Lowrie.
Charlie Lowrie looked to be the easy winner of the U10s, with Robbie Johnstone chasing.
Oliver Whyte looked to have won the U12s
Will Smith led the U14s out, but James Hall moved through to win it, with Will 2nd. Ben Johnstone, who had taken a fall, which
knocked the stuffing out of the lad, came 3rd.
Lots of seniors turned up and we had six finishers in the top ten and ten in the top twenty. The leading positions were as follows:
2 Gareth Hird
5 Mark McGoldrick
7 Will Marshall
8 Sam Watson
9 Kirt Livesey
10 Jack Smith
14 Jason Hemsley
16 Lucas Payne
20 Paul Carmen
23 Andy Black
24 Paul Harlowe
Full results, except for the juniors, are now in the results section.
Oakworth Gala - 4 July 2009

Wasdale Fell Race - The Video
Andy Hirst
Kirsty Hall
On the first posting about this race, Judy's time was shown as 6:17. Apologies to Judy, it should have been 6:12.
In the meantime Andy Holden has been busy in his editing studio and he has emerged with another masterpiece. The resulting video
can be viewed from the link below:
Six Wharfedalers went to this event, which attracted 102 runners. Thanks must go to Cathy Bradley for diligently making
a note of the results. The winner was Ashley Holt from Rossendale in a time of 32:06. The finishing times and positions of the Wharfedalers
were as follows:
4 Bruce Elsworth 33:07
38 Andy Holden 41:08
53 Scott Baistow 42:21
62 Cathy Bradley 43:19 (5th lady)
77 Raj Madhas 47:42
91 Lynn Whittaker 51:51 (12th lady)
It was quite a pleasant dry evening until the black clouds came over and it decided to pour down, thunder and lighten,
so Lynn and Cathy's warm up consisted of hiding under an old trailer! The cloud burst did clear for the start of the race though.
Hawkswick Dash - Sunday 19 July 2009
As part of the "all our yesterdays" series, Barry Scholes has kindly sent through the report and results of ten years ago.
Rekindle memories of runners who are no longer out on the fells or take a reality check of how well you really did ten years ago?
We are still awaiting the results of this 7m/1200ft race, but we have some brief details. The positions of the leading Wharfedalers
were as follows:
4 Kirt Livesey
6 Colin Moses
7 Jason Hemsley
8 Marcus Rae
The first three were enough to secure Wharfedale the team prize. Paul Carman came in shortly after Marcus, but at the moment,
we do not know his position. There were a few more Wharfedalers in the race, but we have no information about them at present.
Further details follow.
Wasdale Fell Race - 11 July 2009
Judy Howells
Kirsty Hall
More pictures from Wasdale, this time of Judy and Kirsty climbing out of Styhead.
Snowdon International Fell Race - 18 July 2009
Brief report from Cathy Bradley.
Three Wharfedalers went down for this race which was won by Andi Jones again in 1hr 08, which was 2 minutes slower than last year's time.
Bruce Elsworth had a cracking race to finish 33rd in 1hr 20 minutes, knocking 2 minutes off last year's time. Goldie, after suffering a tumble on
what is a really rocky and gnarly descent in places, did really well in 1 hr 30 and 84th place, against a really tough field of runners.
Cathy Bradley was 23rd lady in 1hr 45, 228th place out of a total field of 432.
Full results are now in the results section.
Hawkswick Fell Race - 19 July 2009
1st U12 Girl Ellamae Gibson
1st U14 Girl Nicole Narey
Wharfedale had so many junior runners out at this event, that it is not possible to mention them all. However, on looking
at the results, it is striking how many times our youngsters took the first two places.
In the U9s, Robbie Johnstone was first, followed by Adam Gibson. In the U12s, Charlie Lowrie was first and was followed
home 2 seconds later by Oliver Whyte. Ellamae Gibson was first girl. In the U14s, Will Smith was first, followed by Ben Johnstone and
Nicole Narey was first girl. In the U17s, Jonathan Bradshaw was first boy. So it was a clean sweep for Wharfedale in the junior races,
with a young Wharfedaler winning every race. Well done to all our youngsters. They have done the club proud.
In the seniors, the race was won by promising local youngster James Mountain who just held off Brendon Taylor.
First Wharfedaler, Ted Mason, had to settle for third place in a race which he won ten years ago and he finished just ahead of
Sam Watson who continues to improve.
Full results are in the results section.

Joss Naylor Challenge - Saturday 12 September 2009
First of all, not only is this a tough challenge, but it is a condition, laid down by Joss Naylor, that you must use your attempt to raise money
for charity. Andy has picked Macmillan Cancer Support and you can donate to his money raising effort on the following link:
As many will be aware, Andy Hirst is attempting this challenge and the date is rapidly approaching. He has had offers from help
from within the club, some of which are not yet firmed up and other offers were by proxy - "oh he'll help". He would like three supporters for each leg.
This allows for illness on the day and it also allows for runners not being able to keep up or dropping out. At the moment, he only has two definite

This week, it is Ambleside sports with its traditional Guides Race. In the continuing series of looking back
at the Bofra races of ten years ago, Barry Scholes has once more provided the results and race report.
Those of you with good memories may remember Tim Stedman competing in the Ilkley Moor Fell race, carrying a ring round
the course and proposing to his fiancee afterwards. Well, Tim doesn't mess about and the happy day was 11 July.
All of us at Wharfedale Harriers wish Tim & Hannah all the very best for the future and hope that they have a long and happy
life together.
A few special memories were captured on camera and the happy couple would like to share them with us.
