Thirty three Wharfedalers, including ten juniors, greeted the start of the festive season by turning up for the annual pre Christmas
off road run and supper at the home of Graham & Pat Wadsworth. Sam Wadsworth led the run out, which this year took everyone over
Pinhaw before returning through the village and along the beckside. Not everyone who attended went on the run, but young Lucy and Sam
Horrocks were up for it, with young Sam once more showing his appetite for night time off road running and making it all the way
to Pinhaw summit.
Sam Watson, still nursing a leg injury, was not up to off road running, but he and Lucas Payne went on a run down to
Carleton, returning on the road past the Working Mens Club and the steep climb back up to the plantation on the tops.
Thanks must go to Lynn Whittaker and Kathryn Payne who did a sterling job in helping Pat dispense the usual fare of chips,
meat and potato pie, chilli con carni and vegetarian cannelloni to everyone.
There are a few more pictures of the evening in the gallery.

West Yorkshire Cross Country League Sunday 6 December 2009
Nicole Narey
James Hall
Alex Speight
The last race in this league took place in Nunroyd Park and Tamara Hird has sent in a report of the day.
Luckily, the rain held off until this event was over and it was a pleasant night for both runners, bikers and marshals.
These events attract all ages and abilities and once more it was nice to see young Sam & Lucy Horrocks taking part. Lucy
ran to Sharp Haw and back, but Sam completed the whole course.
This is perhaps a course where bikers do have a chance, even though there is a fair amount of ground where the bike has to be
carried. And so it proved on the evening. Pete Keron was trailing by six places at the top of Sharp Haw and he may have lost
even more ground on the ascent to Rough Haw, but once off Sharp Haw on the return, he was able to start riding, even though the ground
was boggy and muddy in places and when he reached the track, he came into his own and passed the lead runner, Paul Crabtree. Mind you, it was
a close run thing, with just 11 seconds separating the two leaders.
Young Jack Smith was going well and was leading Will Marshall at Sharp Haw. However, on the return, he suffered from a bout of
stomach cramp and Will went on to pass him and finish as second runner.
As usual, a number of ladies took part and the first back was Jill Myers, who does seem to be at home with this winter evening
off road running.
Once more, an enjoyable evening was had by all and again illustrates how those devoted to off road running can continue to maintain
their fitness and enjoy their sport during the winter nights.
By popular demand, there will be an off road pub run next week. It will from the Listers Arms at Malham. Meet at
6:45 pm for 7:00pm start.
The Stoop Fell Race - Sunday 20 December 2009
The latest news from Dave Woodhead is that the race is definitely on, but that it will now follow the old route, which is straight up
the Stoop and back again. Parking on Penistone Hill may be impossible, unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle and it
may be advisable to park in Haworth and walk up to the start.
The Curly Wurly Junior Quarry Runs will also be defintely on.
The Stoop Fell Race - 20 December 2009

The results for this race are now out and they include a Wharfedaler not mentioned in our initial report. New member Nicholas
Charlesworth was third Wharfedaler, coming home in 23rd place in a time of 36:29. Apologies to Nicholas for this oversight.
There was a good turnout of Wharfedalers for this event which was run in conditions which were icy, and at times, treacherous underfoot, with snow
showers to boot. The race was won by Rob Hope for the 7th consecutive year. Numbers were a bit lower than normal, however everyone who turned up
seemed to enjoy it. Will Marshall has written a report of the day, which can be accessed from the link below.

The next race is the 26th running of Silsden's 3 Mile Fun Run, which over the years has raised some £1,600 for organisations both
local and international. Every year between 60 and 100 hardy souls assemble at the Green in Silsden to begin the ascent of Bradley Road
and Hole Lane before cruising across Heights Lane whilst preparing for the tumultuous descent of Horn lane and Bradley Road. To celebrate
a fantastic 26 years of what must be the area's most long running road event, participants are invited to commemorate the fact that
the event started as a fund raiser to finance the fledgling Silsden Rangers ARLFC's by sporting a rugby shirt of their choice.
As ever, each runner will receive a timed certificate, sox, a mystery prize and, donations permitting, a surprise from Santa's sack!!
(Competitors have traditionally contributed small wrapped donations.)
As a special incentive to the seriously challenged, Dave Throup's 1991 record time stands at 15 mins 25 secs. This year, there will be
a cash prize, of £1.00 per second shaved from the record by the winner, if the record is broken!!
The event starts at 11.15 from The Green (Bradley Road) Silsden with entries on the day costing £2 and being available from 10.30.
Though there is money on offer, this is not an elite event and participants of all ages and abilities are most welcome.
The prize giving will take place in the Sunnybank social club asap after 12.00.
Any queries, please ring the race organiser, Chris Buckley on 01535 655766

With the holidays, we are a bit late with this one, but here is the Wharfee video of this race. A good production, taken
under difficult conditions.
