1999 Farleton Knott Race Report 1999 Farleton Knott Results Ambleside - 30 July 2009
For a mid week race, there were quite a few Wharfedalers at this event and lots of our juniors. The seniors were led home by
Iain Gibbons in 17th place, followed by Carl Bradhsaw and Barry Scholes. Val Done was third lady and first lady vet 40.
In the U17s, there was a tight group at the front and Jonathan Bradshaw came in 2nd behind Tom Doyle, with Jack Smith seventh and Will Marshall eighth. Scott Baistow was seventeenth. In the U14s, the leading juniors came in like a train, but had to be content with second, third and fourth places. They were led by Ben Johnstone, then it was Will Smith followed by James Hall. Nicole Narey was second girl. There was no U9s, just U12s. The junior Wharfedalers came in as follows:
Farleton Knott - 2 August 2009![]() Once more the Wharfedale juniors put on a fine show, taking the first place in each race. Not only that, but team mates were close behind. The positions of the leading juniors were as follows:
Pictures of some of our juniors are in the gallery. Sorry that all our youngsters are not included, but the photographer was not on the ball today. Pictures of the seniors will be added to the gallery shortly. Thanks to Tim Done, the full results are now in the results gallery. Y Garn - 1 August 2009
A report in from Cathy Bradley about this race: Myself, Tamara and Kirsty went on a girl's roadtrip down into the depths of Wales to do the last of the British Championship races - Y Garn. We set off Friday teatime in the ladies club team official transport - Kirsty's new campervan! At 3m and 1500' it sounds like a bit of a doddle - how deceiving! The race starts on a short uphill road section, but you are soon into the lung busting climb which seemed to go on forever. The route then tips you out onto a large boulder field section before turning at the summit and heading off down a long steep grassy gully. The last mile is a gradual descent on good paths, but after the steep descent, this was really testing on the legs because from there, it is then a fast 500 yard sprint to the finish line. This is a great race to do for anyone who is holidaying in this area of Wales next year- it has a bit of everything, no wonder it was chosen as a Championship race! Full results are in the results section. Our ladies finished as follows:
Borrowdale Fell Race - 1 August 2009
One or two Wharfedalers dropped out of this race, but seven still took part. They were led home by Colin Moses followed by Sam Watson.

Hellifield Gala - 1 August 2009![]() The Yorkshire Junior Championship races were held at Hellifield Gala and quite a few of our youngsters were there and not only that, but many then also turned out the following day at Farleton Knott. In the U18s, Jonathan Bradshaw was 2nd to Billy Pinder. The U14s saw Will Smith win the race and set a new course record, but it was tight. James Hall was third, yet he was only 2 seconds behind Will. In the U10s, Sam Johnstone was 3rd. The full results, including all the seniors are in the results section. Pictures from this race will be added to the gallery shortly. Farleton Knott Fell Race - 2 August 2009

Crow Hill Reverse - 4 August 2009
Tamara Hird, Jason Hemsley and Colin Moses took part in this 5m/1000ft race, which was run in reverse from last year. The finishing positions
were as follows:
Stoney Middleton Fell Race - 23 July 2009
A bit late with this one due to a breakdown in email communications. This is a race that you would not normally
expect to find a Wharfedaler, but Ted Mason was in the area on a social visit and thought that he would give it a go. A few
other good runners also had the same idea and Ted found himself up against Stuart Bond who set a new course record and Lloyd Taggart
who came home in second place. At 5.2 miles and only 650 ft of ascent, it was not the ideal race for Ted, but despite
that and the competition Ted came home in 6th place
The full results are hard to find, but they are now in the results section. Turnslack Fell Race - 25 July 2009
Another one that is a bit late, but only just learnt that Keiron Ashworth was the only Wharfedaler there. He finished
in 71st place in a time of 101.12 and was the 15th V40. There are no results at the moment.
Whittle Pike Fell Race - 5 August 2009
It was another clean sweep for our juniors at this event. The winners in each category were:
U16s Scott Baistow U14s Ben Johnstone U12s Lloyd Davies U10s Robbie Johnstone U8s Logan Hargreaves-Madhas In addition, Zoe Baistow was 4th girl in the U12s, Herbie Davies was 4th in the U10s and Sam Johnstone was 3rd in the U8s. In the seniors, Andy Holden was first Wharfedaler, with Cathy Bradley not far behind. The full results for all the races are in the results section. Steel Fell - 5 August 2009
Two Wharfedalers were out the other night for this one, Chris Newman and Keiron Ashworth. The finishing positions and times
were as follows:
Hellifield Gala - 1 August 2009
It has been a few days in the making, but well worth waiting for. It is the latest video from Andy Holden You can view it at:

The full race results will not be available for another week, but we can now confirm that Ted Mason did indeed win the seniors race.
Will Smith won the U14s with Ben Johnstone 2nd and Nicole Narey 1st girl. In the U12s, Oliver Whyte was 2nd, Robbie Johnstone was 3rd,
Logan Hargreaves_Madhas was 5th and Adam Gibson was 6th. The 1st girl was Ellamae Gibson and she was 4th overall.
The full results will be posted next week. Cray Fell Race - 9 August 2009
The main news from this race is that Ted Mason has followed on from his victory yesterday by making it two in a row. Mike Fanning led the field out and set a good pace to the summit, where he was just ahead of Ted, but Ted opened up a good lead on the descent and in the end, ran out an easy winner. Amongst the seniors ladies, Val Done once more led them home, followed by Judy Howells and Lynn Whittaker. The positions of our leading juniors were as follows:
After Work Social Run - Monday 10 August 2009This will take place from Tarn House. Meet at 6:00 pmPub Run - Wednesday 12 August 2009This will take place from the Red Lion at Earby. Gareth Hird and Sam Watson were over in Switzerland and they took part in this race. It is 31k / 2200 m, which when converted
to English money is 19.26 miles and 7,217 feet. There were 973 competitors and quite a few of these were British. Of these,
Gary Devine was 18th, Graham Pearce was 26th, Stephen Bottomley was 40th and Angela Mudge was 44th. The Wharfedale lads came in as follows:
Braemar Weekend - Saturday 5 September 2009Message from David Hird.Anybody wishing to experience this unique Scottish weekend with races on Saturday 5th Sept at the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering and again on Sunday 6th at the Blairgowrie Games, please let David Hird know by the weekend. Normally we set off Friday 4th at 12 noon, with a long drive up to Blairgowrie which we use as our base. Arncliffe Road Race - 8 August 2009
Judy Howells and another couple of Wharfedalers entered this race. This is what she had to say about the weekend.
When I arrived at Arncliffe on Saturday afternoon and saw Lynn Whittaker already in her kit, I was encouraged to have a go at the 4m road race. I went off fast to see if I could stay with the front ladies, and hey running on the road is easy! I was flying, but after about 10 minutes including one undone shoelace and a bottle neck of motorbikes to negotiate, I thought - where's the hill, where's the change of pace, where's the rest? So, for the remaining 20 minutes, I just hung on in there. Lynn said she jogged round comfortably and came in just 2:30 behind me and Brian Hugill not long after. It was a brilliant weekend with Wharfedale camper vans and bikes dotted up and down the dale. But with poor fell race results for me at the Arncliffe gala and at Cray the following day, I think I must have lost my mojo in that road race somewhere. If anyone finds it and can bring it back to me, I'll be on the start line of the next race! The full results of this road race will be posted shortly. Rusland Fell Race - 15 August 2009

times.

It starts at 6:45 pm and is 4.5 miles / 900ft. Full details are on the link below.Piethorne Fell Race The August Wharfedaler
It is a bit later than normal, but still well worth waiting for. It is rapidly becoming a "must read" and not just for Wharfedalers.

August Wharfedaler Stanhill Fell Race - 11 August 2009
Bruce Elsworth was the only senior Wharfedaler in this race and he was pipped to the line by Peter Haworth of Horwich and had to settle
for 2nd place.
A few of our juniors were there and were in the top positions. In the U16s, Scott Baistow was 2nd, with Charlie Lowrie 4th and lloyd Davies 5th. Apparently the latter two decided that their race was not long enough and they tagged along in this race. Had they set off at the front with the others, they might have caused a few upsets. In the U12s, Lloyd Davies was first 1st with Charlie Lowrie 2nd. In the U9s, Logan Hargreaves-Madhas was 1st with Tommy Lowrie 4th. The full results and times are in the results section. Arncliffe Fell Race - 8 August 2009
We still do not have the full results from this race due to holidays, but they should be available shortly. However, in the meantime, the above two pictures are from the camera of Paul Carman. So, if you fancy a bit of a change, be at the Dog and Gun for 6:00 pm.Pilgrims Cross - 12 August 2009
Race three in the Rossendale midweek series saw eight senior Wharfedalers and only one junior take part. Our lone
junior, Logan Hargreaves-Madhas, comfortably won the U8s race.
In the seniors, Bruce Elsworth was first home, closely followed by Kirt Livesey. Cathy Bradley was our first lady. The finishing times and places for all the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Lakeland Country Fair - 16 August 2009
It would appear that our youngsters have once more had a good day. Initial reports, which are subject to confirmation, indicate that
Charlie Lowrie won the U9s race, Will Smith won the U14s and Scott Baistow won the U16s.
In the senior race, which goes up Coniston Old Man, Sam Watson came 6th and Paul Carman came 12th. Confirmation of these positions follow, together with the full results. Arncliffe Gala - 8 August 2009
Mike McKenzie is back from holiday and the full results for these races are now in the results section. In the junior races, Will Smith
won the U14s with Ben Johnstone just managing to hold off Phil Done to take 2nd place. Nicole Narey was first girl.
In the U12s race, Oliver Keating of Keighley & Craven took first place. Then the Wharfedale juniors came in like a train, taking the next
5 places. They were: 2 Olver Whyte, 3 Robbie Johnstone, 4 Ellamae Gibson (1st girl), 5 Logan Hagreaves-Madhas, 6 Adam Gibson.
In the seniors, Mike Fanning came down to Wharfedale for the weekend and gave the Wharfedalers a run for their money. He finished just behind Ted Mason in 2nd place and ahead of Goldie who finished 3rd. Our other top ten finishers were Colin Moses in 6th place and Marcus Rae in 10th place Worsthorne Moor Fell Race -16 August 2009
He may be a Vet40, but Kirt Livsey can give most people a race on the day. He was the only Wharfedaler in this
7 mile/900ft race and he came home in third place and first Vet 40 emphasising that he is still very much around.
Rusland Show - 15 August 2009
Three Wharfedalers went up for this 5m/850ft race. Their positions were:
Lakeland Country Fair - 16 August 2009
The results for the senior race are now available, but no confirmation of the junior positions, nor any pictures of the juniors, as yet. Cullingworth Trail Race -Wednesday 16 September 2009A message from Gareth HirdThis is a new race around Hainworth Moor with cash and token prizes. The race is being organised my girlfriend, Lionne, the Cullingworth Gala Committee, with technical support provided by me. Golf Ball Fell Race - 19 August 2009
The results for this race will not be available until 23 August, but we do know that Cathy Bradley was 4th lady. Ironically,
the tables for the whole Rossendale Mid Week Series, including this race, are available (in the results section) and these
show that our ladies did best in this competition. Cathy Bradley was third lady overall and Lynn Whittaker was third LV45.
The full results will be posted shortly. All Our Yesterdays - 1995![]() If you think that the above figure look familiar, you are right. It is Andy Smith and the picture was probably taken in 1995 at Helm Hill. Times were different then. He didn't have a luxury motorhome back in those days, in fact it looks like he couldn't even afford a pair of socks. Maybe that is why he was in the lead - he needed the prize money. Darwen Gala - 22 August 2009
The results for these races are awaited, but the word is that our juniors finished as follows:
Gargrave Show - 22 August 2009
A lovely warm summer's day greeted visitors to this traditional English Country Show. There were a few races on elsewhere and not everyone turned up to Gargrave. However for the juniors that did attend, they put on their usual show and took many of the leading places as follows:
Adam Gibson and his sister Ellamae both won their respective classes and in doing so, put a bit of pressure on dad. He came home as 2nd Wharfedaler. First one back for Wharfedale was Iain Gibbons. Full results are in the results section. A few more photographs may be added to the gallery shortly. Burnsall Show - 22 August 2009![]() Some people are gluttons for punishment. Scott Baistow and all of the Gibson family were not contented with running just at Gargrave Show. After they had finished at Gargrave, they high tailed over to Burnsall to take part in the races there. And very well they did too. Scott Baistow won the 16s race, Ellamae Gibson had a brilliant run in the U10 girls to take first place again and Adam could not not quite repeat his performance in the U8s and had to settle for second place. Still a good run though. We had other youngsters at the show too and they all did well. George Carman was 3rd in the U8s, Oliver Whyte was 3rd in the U12s, followed by Harry Muir in 4th place, whilst John Lockwood came 1st in the U14s. There was strong competition in the senior race and Ted Mason had to settle for 4th place. He was followed home by Sam Watson in 8th place and Paul Carman in 12th. Full results are in the results section and if time allows, maybe a few pics will be added to the gallery. After Work Social Run - Monday 24 August 2009Another new run. Meet at Nan Scar, Ickornshaw, Cowling. Directions. From Cross Hills, follow the road to Cowling. Go through the village and past the Dovetail Pine Shop, which used to be the old Black Bull Pub. About 100 yds further on take a right turn (the roads cuts sharply back). Go down there about 400 yds and there is some parking on the right, at the bottom of the hill, before the junction. Meet at 6:00 pm for a 6:10 pm start.Pub Run - Wednesday 26 August 2009This will be from the Greyhound Pub at Barnoldswick. Mett at 6:45 pm for 7:00 pm start.Wedding Bells - 22 August 2009![]() It must be a club first for two members to get married to each other and what a lovely couple they make. Saturday saw them tie the knot in Bali. Everyone at Wharfedale Harriers wishes them all the best for the future. Glenurquhart Highland Games - 22 August 2009
Will Marshall loves running North of the Border, this time coming third in the fell race at these games.
Thanks to Will for typing up the results and these are now available in the results section. Burnsall Show - 22 August 2009![]() Another picture from Burnsall, this time showing George Carman proudly displaying the medal and the prize money that he had just won. Gargrave Show - 22 August 2009![]() A few more pictures of the day have now been added to the gallery. All Our Yesterdays - Muker & Hebden
These races are coming up shortly and continuing our series of looking back, the results and reports from ten years ago
are available from the links below. They saw Kate Rogan run in her first senior races and on both occasions, she was second lady
behind International, Karen Slater. Thanks once more to Barry Scholes for making these available.
Hebden 1999 Results Hebden 1999 Report Muker 1999 Results Muker 1999 Report Reeth Show - 26 August 2009
The school holidays enabled a lot of our youngsters to attend this show and once more they showed their metal. In the U17s,
Jonathan Bradshaw was first with Jack Smith coming home in third place. The under 14s saw young Wharfedalers having a tussle amongst
themselves for the first three places with Will Smith taking the honours and two seconds separating Ben Johnstone (2nd) and James Hall (third).
Nicole Narey was first girl by a comfortable margin. Lloyd Davies was 3rd in the U12s with Zoe Baistow being 3rd girl.
The senior race saw Bruce Elsworth come home in 2nd place. Full results are in the results section. Pendleton Fell Race - 29 August 2009
Only two Wharfedalers turned up for this race which was won by Ashley Holt of Rossendale in a time of 38:16. First Wharfedaler,
in 41st place, was Barry Scholes with a time of 47:13, followed by John Thompson, in 52nd place, with a time of 49:17.
Full results are in the results section. Malham Show - 29 August 2009
Only very brief details of this event at the moment. Ted Mason won the senior's race with Bruce Elsworth 3rd. A few of our juniors were at the show and subject to confirmation, took the following places:
Dentdale Fell Race - 29 August 2009![]() We had only one runner in the men's race which was Sam Watson. He had a good run against some class opposition to finish in 26th place and first junior man. We had a full ladies team out with Tamara Hird finishing in 22nd place, Judy Howells in 33rd place and Cathy Bradley in 39th place. This resulted in Wharfedale finishing 7th team. Full results for both races are now in the results section. Hebden Sports - 31 August 2009![]() All the youngsters had a great time at this Dales Sports Day, as the rain managed to hold off until the senior fell race. Brief details and results:
