George Bernard Shaw once famously said, "Youth is wasted on the young". In Will Marshall, we have someone
who shows that this is not always the case. It is well known that Will is very enthusiastic about the sport of Fell Running
and about his club. But his enthusiasm does not stop there. Not only does he find time for his academic studies and his training,
but in a mass of youthful exuberance, he has gone out and produced a club magazine. He must have devoted considerable time and effort to this
project, as it is very professionally laid out and it runs to six pages, covering aspects of the club and fell
running that are not covered by the web site.
The magazine is in pdf format and is available to download from the link below.. Either sit and read it at your computer or print it out and read it at your leisure. Either way, it is a jolly good read. The Wharfedaler Pendle Fell Race - 4 April 2009
Wharfedale were well represented today in both the junior and senior races. Taking the junior races first, we had two outright winners. Charlie Lowrie won the U10s race in 3:50, ahead of Robbie Johnstone in 6th place and Herbie Davies in 16th place. The other outright winner was Ben Johnstone in the U14s race ahead of Annabel Mason in 8th place. Elsewhere in the juniors, Sam Johnstone was 17th in the U8s race and Tommy Lowrie was 27th. The U12s race saw Lloyd Davies finish in 4th place and Zoe Baistow in 20th place. The senior race was won by Tom Addison of Helm Hill followed by Gary Devine from Pudsey & Bramley and Tom Adams of Ilkley. Against such strong competition, it was good to see the Wharfedalers led home by two juniors. Jonathan Bradshaw followed up his good performance at Arant Haw by finishing in 7th place and our other junior, Jack Smith finished in 12th place. Our first senior home was new member Martyn Speight who finished in 23rd place. The finishing places and times for all Wharfedalers were as follows:
Full results and maybe a few pictures will follow shortly. Slieve Bearnagh - 4 April 2009
Our ladies won valuable points this weekend in the British Fell Running Championships. Tamara Hird, Kirsty Hall and Judy Howells hopped over
to Northern Ireland on Friday night, resisting the Guinness for one night only and turned out with 'Britain's best' to compete in this race.
At just 3.8miles and 2680 feet, this forms one of the 'short races' needed for the championship.
Tamara said - 'I didnt enjoy that - I've been spending too long on the roads' Kirsty said - 'I'd been instructed by my physio not to run for a few more weeks, but the race organisers gave me permission to walk round the course setting me off half an hour early - I wasn't going to miss this trip and feel great that I could allow our girls to get the team points. Judy said - 'Everyone was telling me how rough this race was going to be. I was expecting much worse - I think those Kendal Winter League descents have done me the world of good'. The Wharfedale girls were 7th team behind Calder Valley, Eyri, Mourne Runners, Keswick, Carnethy and Pennine. They celebrated and danced the night away in O'Hares with the rest of the fell running community in true fell runner style. They may not be able descend the hills as quick as some of the others, but these girls can at least get up on the dance floor in more style than any Pudsey & Bramley or Borrowdale boy! Full results are now available. Perth, Australia Asics Bridges 10K - 5 April 2009
Adam Baker is now in Perth, Australia and he entered a road race, which is not his normal preference. He has sent in brief report as follows:
I am in Perth Australia at the moment but thought I better do something to keep my hand in. I broke my golden rule and entered a road race, yes you read correctly, The Asics Bridges 10k to be exact. It started from Langley park in Perth city centre on Sunday at 8 am and even at that time the sun was very hot. I entered group b which was 38 - 45 minutes and just hoped. Even stood in the line up ready to start, I was ringing wet - god it was hot. We set off and I decided just to aim for a steady pace from the start and stick to it which I did. It was quite freaky running up the side of the motorway whilst cars are coming down. Apart from that, the views were fantastic, especially from the footbridge over the Swan River. Even with just 2K to go, I kept to the pace and came in little over 44 minutes and still had a bit left. After that I went for a quick dip in the river and a bacon sandwich. Rsults will be added later. Will Smith Enters Athletics![]() Will Smith is a talented young runner and has decided to test his ability on the athletics track in the pre-season warm ups. As you might expect, he has had considerable success and a brief report from Sharon Smith is below. Sharon's Report Blackpool Half Marathon - 5 April 2009
Last month Lucas Payne entered the Trimpell 20 and despite beating his time of two years ago, he was not happy.
Well perhaps Blackpool suits him better than Morecambe. He entered this race on Sunday, along with 993 others. Out of these,
he came 9th and this occasion, he was delighted. His finishing time was 1:20:45.
Full results are in the results section. Asics Bridges 10K - 5 April 2009
The results for this race are now out and show that Adam was 241st out of 1528 and 45th in his category. To say that his
preference is for fell running, he is reasonably happy with the result.
Full results are in the results section. Bunny Run One - 7 April 2009
Wow! There were some big names in this race. Yorkshire Cross Country Champion, Jorge Thomas; Olympian, Alistair Brownlee; Veteran, Ian Holmes
and many more. For our two youngsters, Jonathan Bradshaw and Jack Smith to come 11th and 12th respectively against such opposition speaks
volumes about their performance on the night and their potential for the future.
We had a total of seven youngsters out on the night and they all have the potential to emulate our two front runners. It was nice to see Emily Throup back out running again and also to welcome new members Raj Madhas and Linda Hargreaves to these Bunny Runs. The placings and times for the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Anniversay Waltz - 11 April 2009
It was a lovely day for this event this year, although the valley was full of cars due to it also being a Bank
Holiday weekend. Full results will be posted in due course, but provisional results for Wharfedalers are undernoted. The junior results
are a bit spartan, but this is the best information available at the moment. One thing is certain and that is that Charlie Lowrie
had a good race to win easily and Jonathan Bradshaw maintained his recent form to come home in second place. More details and maybe a few
photographs will be added shortly

Rivington Pike - 11 April 2009Alex Speight Wins the U14s Race
Martyn Speight could not get an entry into the Anniversary Waltz so he ran this race instead. Alex had a good run, winning the the
U14s race and Martyn came 28th in the seniors race.
Full results follow. Pub Run - Wednesday 15 April 2009This will take place from the Devonshire Arms, Cracoe. Meet at 6:45 pm for a 7:00 pm start.Anniversary Waltz - 11 April 2009
The results are now out for this race and there are a few pictures of the day in the gallery. Bunny Run Two - 14 April 2009
In almost perfect conditions on Haworth Moor, the race set off at fast pace and ended up as a tussle between Will Smith
and Ian Holmes, with the latter eventually running out the winner.
Bruce Elsworth, our first runner home, felt the pressure of the pace. He also felt the pressure of Jack Smith on his tail and he just managed to hold him off at the finish. Jonathan Bradshaw was our third finisher. The times and finishing places for the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Pub Run - Wednesday 22 April 2009Please note that this will take place from the Listers Arms at Malham. Meet at 6:45 pm for 7:00 pm start.Coledale Horseshoe - 18 April 2009
It was hot and sunny for this race with no wind, so the conditions were quite demanding. Ten Wharfedalers turned out
and the finishing positions and times were as follows;
Skipton Triathlon - 19 April 2009
This event is a 400 metre swim, a 21k bike ride and a 5k run - just the sort of thing for an all round athlete like Pete Keron. It was good racing ,
a beautiful day and he came home in 17th place out of 370 male riders. So, a good result for Pete, but given the day, he rather wished that
he had been out on the fells.
Full results are in the results section. Bunny Run Three - 21 April 2009
Two hundred and sixty nine runners took part in this race including 19 Wharfedalers. Jonathan Bradshaw was back on form to lead
them home. A lot of the youngsters improved on their times for last week, including Scott Baistow, Jack Smith, Will Smith and Ben Johnstone.
As a result of these improvements, both Jonathan and Jack managed to beat Bruce Elsworth and Will Smith was probably the first U14 boy.
The places and finishing times for the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Pub Run - 22 April 2009![]() There is an old Chinese proverb which says that "A picture's meaning can express ten thousand words". The above picture sums up the club. A mixture of all abilities, the young and the not so young all getting together to enjoy this glorious countryside in which we are lucky enough to live and improve their fitness at the same time. The picture was taken by Andy Holden and all his pictures of the evening are now in the gallery. After Work Social Run - Monday 27 April 2009Please note that this will be from the Cross Keys at Skipton with a 6:00 pm start.Three Peaks Fell Race - 25 April 2009
More pictures are in the gallery, including some from Paul Carmen and Andy Holden. Possibly a video from Andy will be added shortly. The race was won as expected by Rob Jebb in a slightly faster time than he acheived last year. Most Wharfedalers improved on their 2008 times and in the cases of Bruce Elsworth, Mark McGoldrick, Sam Watson and Judy Howells, the improvement was quite considerable. Mark Sandamas had an excellent run to lead the Wharfedalers home, closely followed by Bruce Elsworth and new member Rob Shaw, who looked very relaxed at the top of Ingleborough and did not look like he had just completed the best part of a gruelling race. Kirt Livesey was complaining about cramp and Andy Hirst, although he was not complaining, looked to be battling. Jonathan Gibson did well in his first Three Peaks race, although at the top of Ingleborough, he was showing signs of the task he had taken on. Of our ladies, Judy Howells had a brilliant run knocking 29 minutes off her 2008 time and Cathy Bradley was another one who did really well in her first Three Peaks Race. The finishing times and places for all the Wharfedalers were as follows:
London Mini Marathon - 26 April 2009![]() While all eyes this weekend were on the Three Peaks race, Will Smith was representing his county in the Mini Marathon and helping the team to finish in third place. A brief report of the day is available from this link. Race Report Lakeland Bike Ride - 16 April 2009
Pete Keron certainly knows how to give a girl a good time. A weekend in the Lakes conjures up all sorts of possibilities. A pleasant walk on the tops taking in the fresh spring air. Maybe a romantic walk along Ennerdale Water where Bill Clinton proposed to Hillary. A stroll through the daffodil meadows that so inspired Wordsworth. Instead of all those things, Pete treated Angela to a bike ride over Wrynose Pass! Is this a case of treat 'em mean and keep 'em keen, Pete? By all accounts, Pete and Angie are still going out together, so the approach seems to be working. That Angela Gray is just one tough girl. Cheviot Summit Fell Race - 26 April 2009
Running in the north east seems to bring the best out of Will Marshall and this race was no exception. In a field of 55 runners,
Will finished in 4th place and was well pleased with his run.
Full results are now in the results section. Bunny Run Three - 21 April 2009
Lisa Speight was out on Haworth Moor last week cheering on the Wharfedalers and taking a few pics. Two of them are above and there a few more in the gallery Three Peaks Fell Race - 25 April 2009
The first part of Bruce Duncan's video is now available for viewing below.
Three Peaks Race 25th April 2009 (part one) from Bruce Duncan on Vimeo. Bunny Run Four - 28 April 2009
There were not as many Wharfedalers out tonight. Maybe the weather put a few off, although it was not
that bad for running and most of those who did turn up, improved on their times of last week. It did't put Keiran Ashworth
off who thought that he would give this race a go. As usual, the youngsters led the way
home, and it was a close race between Jonathan Bradshaw and Jack Smith, as it was between Will Smith and Ben Johnstone.
The finishing times and places for the Wharfedalers were as follows:
Dick Hudsons Fell Race - Wednesday 29 April 2009There will be no pub run this week in view of the above race which starts at Ilkley at 7:30 pm. Registration will be on the grass opposite Millennium Gardens. The start of the race is by the pavilion at the side of the lake and the finish is at the barrier on the track down from White wells. Competitors can choose their own route - there will be a marshall at the stile on the wall opposite Dick Hudson's pub.Dick Hudsons Fell Race - 29 April 2009Jack Smith first runner home
On the night, it was a victory for the bikers. Out of the field of seventy one, there were six bikers and five of these were in the top ten
and the first three places went to the bikers. First home was Steff Macina, who came flying down the track and looked like he was going to demolish
the barrier, but he swerved to one side and stopped by the car park below. Steff had gone across the moors on the same route as the runners.
On the other hand, Jason Hemsley elected to take the much longer route on the road and missed first place by ten seconds. It was an exciting finish.
Third home was Pete Keron. He was actually lying fourth but Steve Bottomley, who was in third place, turned off the path by White Wells,
perhaps mistakenly thinking that the finish was by the road. Sadly this mistake cost him three places.
The bikers having taken the first three places, it then came to the runners. First one home was young Jack Smith who is starting to turn into a bit a formidable force. He ascended the moor quite strongly and once on the tops, he managed to work his way to the front and in the end, he had a reasonable margin over fifth place and second placed runner, Lee Morley of Ilkley. Bruce Elsworth was the third runner home and he was obviously feeling the effects of the Three Peaks race at the weekend. As he said afterwards, "I tried to run faster and although my arms speeded up, my legs just could not keep pace with them". Our next finisher was Andy Black who is now putting in more appearances at training and in racing and he is now starting to show some of his old form again. The first lady home was Heather Dawe of Ilkley, who came home in 29th place, second was Renee Saxton of Otley in 35th place and she was followed by Judy Howells in 37th place. Just behind her in 39th place was the very promising U18 runner, Jenny Dybeck from Ilkley. It was good to see John Wootton and Vicky Rae having a run out as it is a while since both have been seen out on the fells. It was also nice to see new members Sam White and Simon Franklin taking part in this race. All in all, a very good and interesting race on a very pleasant evening. |
