Yorkshire Vets Athletic Association

Paul Harlowe would like to remind everyone that the following events are coming up shortly. There are 5 year age bands from 35 and you do not have to be a Yorkshireman to enter, as the club is affiliated.
  • 14 September. 10K championships
  • 12 October. Road relay at Esholt. One 2.5 mile lap for all runners. Teams up to age 49 need four runners. Others need three.
  • 2 November. Fell championships at Meltham AC. 7 miles / 900 ft. See FRA handbook.
Full details are on the YVAA website. If anyone is interested in the relay, please contact Paul who will co-ordinate things, but he may not be able to run, as he is injured at the moment.

Dufton Fell Race - 30 August 2008

Dufton Ladies Team
Wharfedale Ladies Team at Dufton

Our growing number of our women members was perhaps reflected yesterday when we had more women out on the fells at Dufton than men. And they did the club proud too. Tamara Hird led them home, followed by Catherine Wolfenden and Judy Howells.

Amongst the men, Jason Hemsley was first home followed by Sam Watson.

Tamara Hird wrote a brief report of the day. Read Tamara's report

Full results are in the results section.

Complete Runner Cross Country League

This was formerly the West Yorkshire Cross Country League. If you would like to take part, the fixtures are as follows:

  • Sunday 26 October, Skyrac AC
  • Saturday 15 November, Wetherby AC
  • Sunday 7 December, Wakefield AC
The best 3 results out of the 4 races count towards your overall position. For the team competition, the first 4 ladies and the first 6 men count. The cost is £7 to cover all 4 races for the seniors and £4 for the juniors (U11/U13/U15/U17). The league is pre-entry only - so if you would like to take part, please can the Ladies contact Tamara Hird on 07951 129786 / tamarahird@hotmail.co.uk and for the Juniors and Senior Men please contact David Hird on 07765 792807 / davidjhird@madasafish.com by Thursday 18th September.

Junior Running Vests

Juniors who are wanting to acquire a Wharfedale vest will be pleased to learn that Complete Runner at Ilkley have now ordered a fresh stock of Wharfedale junior vests and they are expecting that these will arrive in about two weeks time.

Kilnsey Show - 28 August 2008

Oliver Whyte
Oliver Whyte at Kilnsey Show

Thanks to Tim Done, we now have the results for Kilnsey Show. These are now in the results section. Again, thanks to Tim, there are also results available for Malham and Hebden. Both these latter results are a little incomplete, but it is perhaps better to have something recorded for these events rather than let them get lost in the sands of time.

Weasdale Horshoe - 23 August 2008

Just catching up a bit on all the races over the holiday period. Four Wharfedalers went up for this event and it must be a long time since Kevin Rogan led a team home. But this is what he did, finishing ahead of Neil Taylor and John Thompson. Kate Rogan had a good run to finish 5th lady

Full results are in the results section.

Burnsall 10 Mile Road Race - 22 August 2008

Whilst the lads were doing the Burnsall Classic, two of our girls decided to have a change and tackle a road race. The route is quite tough and undulating, taking in Linton, Grassington and Hebden. Tamara Hird finished 5th lady and Sharon Barker finished 11th.

Full results are in the results section.

Alice's Race, 10k Mytholmroyd - 31 August 2008

Owen Beilby normally sends his reports in fairly promptly, especially when he runs out the winner, but this late August holiday period seems to have affected us all.

Rather than traipsing up to Dufton I decided to spend Saturday looking at carpets and race on Sunday instead. Apologies to Sam & Jason, I didn't know anyone else was running .... more

The results, for what they are worth, are in the results section.

Ben Nevis & Braemar - 6 September 2008

Many members are heading north this weekend for these two events and there will be regular updates on the web site over this period, to keep you informed how everyone is faring.

Ben Nevis - 6 September 2008

Friday Afternoon at Fort William

Ben Nevis John Thompson
Ben Nevis
John Thompson

Mark Bennett, John Thompson and Neil Taylor have an early recce. The conditions are dry, mild but very breezy, even at low levels. The feeling is that pre-race beer and bravado are needed at the meal this evening.

7:30 Saturday Morning

Neil Taylor was up early and reported as follows:

Overcast, dry with stronger wind this morning. Late arrivals last night, Pete Keron and Lucas Payne no doubt still in the land of nod. Unfortunately, two Wharfedale withdrawals. Tamara Hird is down with a cold and Pete Jackson with a nasty football injury. Otherwise, all team members rearing to go, at least will be when we get up. Breakfast, here we come!!!

9:06 Saturday Morning

More from Neil Taylor

Breakfast now finished and the realisation of perhaps unwarranted optimism on the guess your finish times in the pub last night! Cloud level variable, though no doubt upper slopes will be in mist. Buffeting wind expected

10:30 Saturday Morning

Update from Neil Taylor

Car park filling up nicely and our support team, Sarah, Emma, Johnny, Melissa, Nicole, Mary Jane and Kathryn now en route to their chosen vantage points. Mel and Johnny aiming for the summit! Still windy with a definite chill in the air ... hope it stays dry.

11:20 Saturday Morning

Update from Neil Taylor

Registration now in full swing. Commemorative buff to each runner - nice. Given chilly and windy conditions, mine will be put into immediate service.

11:32 Saturday Morning

Update from Neil Taylor

Bruce and Cathy here, so all gang now set for a great race. Italian and Spanish Sky Runner Series runners mingling amongst indigenous regulars. Lots of brief chats with friends seldom seen, eg Brian Kirkdale of Hastings on his 31st race.

12:30 Saturday Lunchtime

Update from Neil Taylor

Off to warm up. Then pipe band round the field. Then we're off!!!

Ben Nevis - 6 September 2008

First report of the race from Pete Keron

Bruce Elsworth was first home for Wharfedale in around 30th place, then Mark McGoldrick, Sam Watson and Lucas Payne all in a time of between 1h 50 mins and 2 hours. James Harrison finished in about 2:05 and Kevin Rogan at about 2:25 and then Kate Rogan and Neil Taylor.

Pete went afterwards to cool his legs down in Red Burn. Apparently, you can walk tomorrow, if you do that. Conditions on the top were OK. It was a bit windy and only the very top was in cloud.

Update from Neil Taylor 17:30

All Wharfedalers finished safely. Most of showered and dozing now. Most times a little down on expectations. Kevin retained the Nevin Cup. There is the possibility that Sam Watson may have won the U23 Trophy. Update from Neil Taylor - 18:50

Nevis bar food , beer and celebrations going well. Loads of race stories being retold, no doubt may grow as the evening proceeds.

Pub Run - Wednesday - 10 September 2008

The run will be from the Kings Arms at Silsden. Meet at 6:45 pm for 7:00 pm start.

Bradley Fun Day - 7 September 2008

Despite the weather, this event attracted a large number of youngsters and events such as this can only be good for the future of the sport. It was nice to see that a number of the ever growing band of Wharfedale youngsters were there.

In the under 9s, Charlie Lowrie took the honours, with Robbie Johnstone in 3rd place. It was good to see Lucy Horrocks having a run out again and she came home 2nd girl.

In the under 12s, Ellamae Gibson showed that she is now getting to grips with this older age group by finishing first girl, whilst Harry Muir finished 7th overall.

In the under 14s, there was tough competition amongst the top four with Ben Johnstone running out the winner and Will Smith in fourth place.

In the under 17s, the Wharfedale runners came in like a true team, with Jonathan Bradshaw, Tom Cunningham and Jack Smith taking 3rd, 4th and 5th places. Young Scott Baistow is still battling in this age group, but it is good to see him sticking at it and if he keeps it up, his day will come.

Many senior Wharfedale runners were in Scotland this weekend but it was good to see John Wootton having a run out and finishing third Wharfedaler. Could this be the start of seeing him out on the fells again? It was also good to see Stuart Johnstone once more having a go and if he keeps this up, together with a bit of training, he can only get better.

Thanks to the spot on work by Tim Done, the results are available in the results section.

Blairgowrie Highland Games - 7 September 2008

The crowd that went up to Braemar stopped over and took part in this race. However, after a night out drinking and dancing, only four took to the start line with heavy legs and eyelids, along with the odd balloon knee, to tackle this fast course.

Provisional results :-

Pos Name Time Other
1 Prasad Prasad 16:58
2 Colin Donnelly 17:49
3 Chris Russell 18:02
4 Ted Mason 18:30
9 Barry Scholes 22:40
11 Simon Throup 23:15
17 David Hird 26:19

FRA Championships

After finishing 6th ladies team in the final English and British Championship counter at Dufton on 30th of August -Wharfedale ladies final position is 7th in both the English and British ladies team championships. This is brilliant - especially for a first time! Well done to all those who took part.

Pub Run - Wednesday 24 September 2008

This will be from Tarn House. Meet at 6:45 pm for 7:00 pm start.

The Good Shepherd Fell Race - 20 September 2008

You would normally think that this is one for Owen Beilby, but on the day, Judy Howells was our sole representative. This is what she had to say about the day.

I did the Good Shepherd Classic in Mytholmroyd and was the lone Wharfedaler. It was a lovely day with a mediterranean hot sun and by the end of the afternoon I had made lots of new friends from that strange heathery, boggy and tussocky part of the world! Let everyone take note regarding this race - that the second half race goes on a bit and doesn't start till you are about two thirds through!

Judy was 5th lady and the full results are in the results section.

Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay - Sunday 5 October 2008

The good news is that despite having several runners not available through injury or prior arrangements, we now have a men's team. And what a good team it looks too. It is as follows:

Leg 1: Mark Sandemas / Kirt Livsey
Leg 2: Sam Watson / Gareth Hird
Leg 3: Jonny Bradshaw / Ian Gibbons
Leg 4: Ted Mason/ Owen Beilby

The other good news is that for the first time in the history of the club, we also have an all women's team in the race. This is made up as follows:

Leg 1: Kirsty Hall / Cathy Bradley
Leg 2: Judy Howells / Kate Rogan
Leg 3: Vicky Rae / Angela Grey
Leg 4: Tamara Hird / Cath Wolfenden

Three Shires Fell Race - 20 September 2008

You can always depend on Andy Hirst being there for these great long Lakeland races and on the day, he was accompanied by four other Wharfedalers. The finishing order was Kirt Livesey, Chris Newman, Andy Hirst, Jonathan Gibson and Kate Rogan.

Andy has sent in a report of the day available from the link below.

Read Andy's Report

Settle Loop Race - 14 September 2008

Mark McGoldrick had a good run in this inaugural race, taking third place overall and first local. He sent in a report of the day as follows:

Only two of us turned up today for this 9.5 mile race in its first year being run, myself and John Thompson. Conditions were ideal. We were even fortunate enough to get a little sunshine. A total of 72 runners turned out on what was a fast course, run over limestone paths, tarmac and grassy lanes on the Settle loop. The race was won by the in form Tom Adams of Ilkley Harriers in a time of 1hr 46sec. I managed 3rd place in a time of 1hr 3min. Not to sure how John went on but he seemed pleased enough with his run when we had tea and cake back in the drill hall. He's even thinking about doing the Ben again!! Thanks must go to the organisers and all the helpers in what was a fantastic run event. I even managed to pick up 1st local and a months free membership at the gym in Settle. This would certainly be a fantastic training run for the club one night and a race to think about next year.

Results are in the results section.

Three Shires Fell Race - 20 September 2008

The results are now out for this race and the times and positions of the Wharfedalers were as follows:

112 Andrew Hirst 2:37:52

Calder Way Relay - 14 December 2008

We have entered three teams for this event and it is assumed that all members will be available for selection. If you will not be available on the day, please inform David Hird.

Scafell Pike Race - 27 September 2008

A report from Neil Taylor today about this race and some great results for Wharfedale.

Cracking race today, very well supported by the gang and some great results knocked up! Slightly changed course from previous years (one of the farmer's fields at the start was unavailable), so about 3/4 mile added (or was it 3 or 4 miles....mind it did feel like that at the end with that Ben-road feeling after the long descent off Lingmell). Fantastic running conditions, vest weather throughout (yes, that's sort of the expected norm Chris...), only very light winds on top and visibility perfect!

Okay, from the top...

Bruce, 5th place (after getting poor position at start and starting at back of field!!!) AND this year's "King of the Mountains" (Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike aggregated results).

1st Men's Team - Wharfedale (Bruce, Tim, Chris and young Will M)

Will Marshall won U18 race and is now new course category record holder!!!!

3rd Jack and Jill (couples combined position ) Chris and Kate.

Latest to set off after starter had sent us on our way - Andy H ...by nearly 2 mins! (mind close run thing with Bruce I hear!).

Simon, Judy and I all had decent runs too, though maybe the 3 of us were chatting a bit too much on the ascent methinks!

Great support also from Lynn, Sharon & Will Smith. Cheers Gang!

A well deserved wee dram this evening methinks. Next stop....Embsay tomorrow

This will be from the Social Club at Hellifield. Meet at 6:45pm for 7:00 pm start.

Whernside Fell Race - 27 September 2008

It was good to see that the return of this race attracted 172 runners, although only one Wharfedaler. At 12 miles and an ascent of 3,000 ft, it was a tough run out for Cathy Bradley ahead of the Ian Hodgson Mountain Relays next week. She finished in 145th place in a time of 2:25:41.

Full results are in the results section.

Three Peaks Cyclo Cross - 28 September 2008

Quite a few fell runners took part in this event, including four Wharfedalers and the event itself was won by fell runner, Rob Jebb. Out of the 441 starters, two Wharfedalers, Ian Taylor and Pete Keron, finished inside the top forty. The finishing positions and times were as follows:

Pos Name Time Other
15 Ian Taylor 3:23:59
35 Pete Keron 3:36:14
120 Mark Horrocks 4:05:41
379 Adam Baker 5:28:07

Scafell Pike Fell Race - 27 September 2008

Lynn Whittaker was out and about with her camera on Saturday and her pictures are now in the gallery.

Social Runs and Events

The menu on the left hand side used to just say "Training", but had now been amended to "Training & Social Runs" as in that section, you will now be able to access a list of both the Monday and the Wednesday Runs and Events for the coming months.

Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay - Sunday 5 October 2008

Race Cancelled

Please note that this race has been called off due to the adverse weather conditions. It appears that the campsite at Brothers Water is completely awash, leaving competitors nowhere to either stay or park up.

Dalehead Fell Race - 21 September 2008

Another race where we had only one runner, which was Pete Metcalfe. Out of 60 runners, Pete finished in 49th place in a time of 1:14:02.
