Gargrave Cross Country - 1 August 2007

Yet another good turn out for a mid week race, with Wharfedalers making up half of the field. In only his second race since being injured at Buckden Pike, Ted Mason had a good run to come home in first place. Gary Devine had his usual good run to come second, ahead of Mark McGoldrick and Marcus Rae and stopped Wharfedale from taking all first three places. The Club Championship tables will be updated shortly.

Borrowdale Fell Race - 4 August 2007

Judy Howells

Three Wharfedalers entered this race. You could almost guarantee that Andy Hirst would be there, but he was joined by Mark McGoldrick in his first long distance Lakeland race and by that doughty runner Judy Howells.
Mark did well and came 38th in a race where the leading group is dominated by locals, who know the area well. Andy came home in the top half of the field and no matter how tough the race, we know that Judy will always be amongst the finishers.
Well done to all three runners for competing in this tough race, although for "health & safety" reasons, the race was cut short this year from the usual 17 miles and 6500 fit climb to a mere 15 miles and an ascent of 6150 feet, according to calculations made by Andy.

We await to hear what Mark thought of the race. In the meantime Andy's report is avilable from the link below.

Andy's Report

The finishing times and positions of the Wharfedalers were as follows:

Pos Name Time Other
38 Mark McGoldrick 2:59:25
190 Andy Hirst 3:33:14 V40
373 Judy Howells 4:37:02 F

Farleton Knott - 5 August 2007

Our youngsters were out again for this event and as usual represented the club well. In the under 17s, Jonathan Bradshaw was 3rd and in the U14s, Kieran Thompson was 3rd boy. In the U12s, Ben Johnstone was a close 2nd to James Hall of Bingley, whilst in the U9s, Robbie Johnstone was 3rd boy.
We are now in the holiday season and which probably accounts for why only six seniors turned out for this event. They were lead home by Sam Watson, who came home in 8th place.

The finishing times and positions of all the Wharfedalers were as follows:

Pos Name Time Other
8 Sam Watson 41:49 U23
20 Carl Bradshaw 47:34 V40
33 John Thompson 55:48 V45
35 Kevin Rogan 55:48 V45
36 Kate Rogan 57:30 L
39 Lynn Whittaker 57:41 LV

Hellifield Gala - 4 August 2007

Seven senior Wharfedalers turned out for this event, three of whom also turned out for the Bofra race the following day. The race was won by the remarkable Alistair Brownlee, who beat the course record and yet is still an under 20. He was closely followed by Jonathan Hare, who was only 8 seconds behind him and he is an under 18. If thes lads stick at the sport, they are going to be legends in the future.
Ted Mason continues his comeback and was third behind these two outstanding runners. Also in the top ten was Kirt Livesey in 7th place and Marcus Rae who was 9th.
In the junior races, Jonathan Bradshaw took the silver medal in the U16 Yorkshire Championship and Ben Jonstone was 2nd in the U12s. His brother was 8th in the Under 10s. The finishing positions of all our seniors was as follows:

Pos Name Time Other
3 Ted Mason 23:56
7 Kirt Livesey 26:02
9 Marcus Rae 26:16
30 Kevin Rogan 32:14 V50
38 John Thompson 34:45 V40
46 Vicky Rae 36:32 F
55 Lynn Whittaker 38:32 FV40

Wharfedale to Host the Buckden Pike Race

Some of you may have read on the FRA web site that Allan Greenwood, who has organised this race for the last six years, has decided that he has more than enough on his plate with other races that he organises and would like to pass this race on to someone else.
In many ways, this is a natural one for us to take over. After all, it is situated in Wharfedale.
Peter Jebb, the father of Robb, was asked to organise a race by the Buckden Gala Committee after winning the Fellsman Hike in 1981. He designed the course and handled it for for twenty years before handing over to Allan Greenwood, who organised it for the last six years. This is a prestigious race in the Fell Running calendar and let us hope that we can maintain the standards that have been set in the past.
Incidentally, runner Robert Cutts of Longwood Harriers has completed all of the twenty six races Buckden Pike Races. Let us hope that we can welcome him back next year.

A very pleasant day saw 8 Wharfedalers turn out for this event. Kevin, Neil and Lynn also turned out for the road race, in which Kevin was first Vet 50 and won a bottle of wine.
In the main event, Ted Mason came first and seems to be getting back to form. Bruce Elsworth also had a good run finishing in 5th place. Neil Taylor had a bit of a showing up. Not only was he beaten by Kevin, but he was also beaten by Judy Howells. Maybe the excuse was that he was exhausted from the road race.

Worsthorne Moor - 12 August 2007

We had only one representative at this race and it sounds like there was more road running than fell. However, Adam Baker, not only completed the race, but also submitted the following report.

Quite humid at the start, as it had just stopped raining. The start was out of a field up a tarmac road for about a mile, which then turned in to farm track for a further mile before we met the fell (heaven). On the fell for only a mile to a reservoir, round this on, yes, another tarmac track, which seemed to go on for ever past another reservoir. There was then a small climb and then back the way we came to the finish in the field. I think I finished in about an hour (not bad for me). Not a true fell race; 6 miles on tarmac and tracks and 1 mile on the fells. Very scenic though! And better than sitting at home. Can Neil please come to my next race as this is his job.

Cray - 12 August 2007

Ben Johnstone
Ben Johnstone

The weather did not look so promising when setting off for this race, but once at Cray, the conditions were almost ideal, although it was very boggy on the tops.
We had some great runs from our youngsters. In the under 12s, Ben Johnstone beat James Hall to take first place with a time of 9:29, whilst in the under 17s, Jonathan Bradshaw stormed away from the rest of the field to also take first, with a time of 18:48. In the same race, Tom Cunningham also had a good run to come 3rd with a time of 23:46.
In the seniors, Lynn, Kevin and Judy had already run two races yesterday, but were still up for another today. Ted Mason and Andy Holden also ran in the fell race yesterday and were out again today.
In the race yesterday, Ted ricked his ankle again, but this still did not stop him putting in yet another good performance to take another first place this weekend, even though he was running in two different shoes!
Mark Horrocks was fresh back from his holidays, but despite the lack of training, put in his usual strong performance, coming home in second place after Ted.
Kevin Rogan picked up his second prize of the weekend. He was first V50 in the road race yesterday and was first V45 today.
Judy Howells seems to have hit a bit of form recently and after another good run was first lady home.

A picture gallery will be posted shortly.

Pilgrim's Cross Race - 15 August 2007

Whilst many Wharfedalers were enjoying a pleasant mid week social run and some excellent ale at The Sun Inn at Trawden, Bruce Elsworth was doing a proper race. And very well he did too. Out of 180 finishers, Bruce came 15th. So well done Bruce. There is something about running in a race that the training run cannot provide.

Gargrave Show - 18 August 2007

It seems that many Wharfedalers turned out for this event, including four ladies and thanks must go to Judy Howells for the following report:

A swarm of Wharfedale shirts buzzed on the start line on Saturday. Great to see Jason, Marcus and Mark (Goldie) sporting brand new red white and blue vests as well as the usual suspects, Ted, Mark H, Sam, Andy, Kev and John in theirs and at least four ladies (Kate, Tamara, Judy and Lynn). We were definitely the best turned out club! The race is a fantastic mix of disciplines, wall leaping, stream crossings, a good set of fence vaulting with barbed wire hazards thrown in, then actually a hill to run up and down. We must assume that Mark H tried to gain extra points with a bit of mud wrestling, by the look of him at the end! Prizes for lots of Wharfedalers including 1st Male for Ted and possibly 3rd for Mark H and 5th for Marcus. Kate took 2nd lady closely followed by Tamara for 3rd in an exciting but 'gallant' ladies race.
Sorry if I missed any Wharfedalers out but I'm quite new and don't know everyone yet!

In addition to having 13 runners in the seniors, we also had a youngster in each of the junior races. In the U17s, Jonathan Bradshaw was battling it out with the leading bunch, coming home in 4th place. Keiran Thompson, put in his usual sound run to come 9th in the U14s and Ben Johnstone was pipped into second place by James Hall of Bingley. In the U9s Robbie Johnstone came 7th

The finishing positions of the Wharfedale seniors were as follows.

Lakeland Country Fair, Coniston - 19 August 2007

The Lakes naturally has a calling for all fell runners. Not only is it beautiful scenery, but there is some good running too. This weekend the Lakes beckoned Adam Baker for a run up the Old Man of Coniston from Torver, a total distance of 6.5 miles and an ascent of 2,300 feet. Here is his report.

The weather was a bit rainy and cool (good for running). The ground was sodden and I think they have seen some rain the past few days. This is the first Lakeland race I have done in years and I was a little worried due to the fact it's uphill from the word go. The race set off from the show ground, onto the road for 100 yds, then up a track for about half a mile, before going straight up the Old Man of Coniston and back. I must say I found it very tough. I set my self a target time of an hour and a half, which I think I just about managed. All in all a good race and a good day out.

Weasedale Horseshoe - 18 August 2007

Owen Bielby had a go at this race and just to show that he does not just send in a report when he is in the top ten, here is his report of the day.

I had a dander up to the Northern end of the Howgills this weekend for the latest round of the FRA English Championship. Another damp weekend brought the next round of the English championship and the second of the 'Medium' (8m, 2000ft) races in the calendar. Weasedale was the venue which was meant to be part of the Ravonsdale show. Unfortunately, due to the F&M outbreak the show had been cancelled so there were no distractions for the 400 competitors in attendance. The course starts from the show field and drops down underneath the main road across a few marshy fields and then commences a long runnable drag up to the first checkpoint. We then dropped down and then sharply back up (sorry no idea as to the hill names!). A walk inducing steep climb to the second checkpoint where another fast descent followed before winding up and around the final ascent. From there, it was a long, fast and hard run in with no chance for a breather. I had a poor climb, but made up a few places on the descent, before dropping two places in the final push for glory in the show field uphill finish - what's that all about! - to finish 34th. Disappointingly, my best result in this year's championship was at Fairfield, despite the fact I wasn't there.

The race was won by Simon Bailey with Joe Symonds second - this sets up an exciting finish to the season with Simon and Rob Hope (this year's British Champ) neck and neck with one race to go at Whernside (where Simon holds the record). It would be great to see a few Wharfedale faces there in October - a nice warm up for the Ian Hodgson the following day!

You have to be joking - Webmaster.

Pendleton Fell Race - 25 August 2007

Pendleton 2007 Full Results

This Bank Holiday weekend is packed with fell races and amongst those today was Pendleton. Seven Wharfedalers turned out for this event including new member John Perry, who had a good run, finishing in 19th place.
The race was easily won by James Kevan of Horwich, who finished well ahead of the field. Second and third places were a little closer with Marcus Rae having a splendid run, comimg home in 3rd. His wife Vicky also had a good race, finishing in 82nd place.

A few pictures may be added shortly

The finishing positions of the Wharfedale seniors were as follows.

Pos Name Time Other
3 Marcus Rae 36:14
19 John Perry 42:07
56 Kevin Rogan 47:26 V50
73 John Thompson 49:48 V40

Burnsall Classic Fell Race - 25 August 2007

A busy Bank Holiday weekend saw five Wharfedalers turn out at this event, including John Lockwood in the under 12s, where he came home in 4th place.
We had only two runners in the seniors mens and senior ladies races, so did not have enough for a team place. Owen Bielby and new member Jason Helmsley battled it out between themselves in the men's race and came in together, with Jason just managing to pip Owen to the post. They finished in 18th and 19th places respectively. Perhaps Owen will explain this by the fact that he had already run one race that day, the Burnsall 10 Mile Road Race, where he came 2nd.
It was a similar position in the ladies race with Judy Howells managing to finish in front of Tamara Hird in 7th & 9th place respectively.

Full results are in the results section.

Halton Gill - 26 August 2007

Halton Gill

A few Wharfedalers turned up for this race and Kevin has sent a report and the above picture. Here is his report:

A few of us went to Halton Gill and the attached pic is a group of us. Andy Holden and John Thompson were also there, but were not around for the photo.
I think the positions were as follows:
6th place Andy Holden. Brilliant run 16.24
Kevin Rogan 19.31
Neil Taylor 19.42
John Thompson approx 20.35
Judy Howells 1st Lady 20.53

Great weather. Tough short race, especially for those of us who ran yesterday. Neil turned the top 2nd Wharfedaler after Andy. Then it was me, Judy and John.
Plenty of tea and cakes after the race available from the refreshment tent. Also a barbeque if you fancied a burger, but being an athlete, settled for the cream gateau (big slice). Hebden tomorrow, for the third race of the weekend !!

Hebden Sports - 27 August 2007

Wharfedale Take Three Races

Ben Johnstone Jonathan Bradshaw Ted Mason
Ben Johnstone
Jonathan Bradshaw
Ted Mason

It was a good day for Wharfedale at Hebden sports. We had two particularly good runs from our juniors. Ben Johnstone had a sparkling run in the under twelves where he lead all the way and won the race easily. Then to follow this up, Jonathan Bradshaw did the same in the U17s. In fact he set a cracking pace and as the U17s ran the same course as the seniors, it will be interesting to compare his time to that of Ted Mason.
Talking of which, Ted had a storming run to take first place in the seniors. Again, he won by a good margin over Lee Athersmith and could have probably won it in a faster time if he had been under pressure.
Marcus Rae also had a good race, finishing in in 4th place. Sam Watson had his usual sound race, finishing in 10th place, despite a strenuous training session on Sunday round the pubs of Leeds.
In the Ladies Race, Tamara Hird came second to Helen Glover of Keighley.

The organisers kindly supplied to us on the day details of the results in their "crude" form. As always happens, these results will need some fine tuning and those amended results will be posted in due course. In the meantime, the provisional results are available from the link below.

Hebden 2007 Provisional Results

Malham Show - 25 August 2007

Ted Mason

The results for this race are now available, but the details are very sparse. We already knew that Ted won the race in style, but what we did not know was that we also had all our other senior men (four in total) in the top ten. Lynn Whittaker was our only female representative on the day. Do not get over excited looking at the results. She did not beat Barry Slater. The person behind her was Bridget Slater
This Bank Holiday has been very productive for Ted. Two wins out of two races. Can he make it three out of three at Kilnsey?

The finishing positions of the Wharfedalers were as follows.

Pos Name Time Other
1 Ted Mason 17:04
4 Bruce Elsworth 18:42
6 Mark McGoldrick 19:07
8 Sam Watson 20:16
32 Lynn Whittaker 27:31

Reeth Show - 29 August 2007

With this being a mid week event and especially after such a hectic Bank Holiday weekend, there were predictably fewer Wharfedalers than normal, at this Bofra event.
However, Neil Taylor managed to get some time off work and he sent in a runner's view of the day

Neil's Report

The finishing positions of the Wharfedale seniors were as follows.

Pos Name Time Other
8 Sam Watson 18:40 U23
11 Andy Holden 19:16 V40
23 Neil Taylor 22:17 V45
27 Kate Rogan 22:49 1st Lady
34 Lynn Whittaker 25:02 2nd Lady
