Ian Hodgson Relay 1 October 2006

map readers
The first leg was run by Mark Horrocks and Ted Mason. Ted turned up not feeling well with a touch of flu. He struggled to stay with Mark from the off, but they finished 7th. The second leg was the two youngsters Sam Watson and Shaun Chew and they managed to hold 7th place. They handed over to Andy Black and Mark Brown (Mark is just back from a long summer's hot weather training). The pair were working well together, but with their heads down in the cloud, they managed to miss the check point on High Street by a good mile! Once they realised, they turned back to dib and then once again returned towards Kirkstone. At this point Kurt Livesey, who was nervously checking and re checking his map, and Glen Whittaker started to shiver as the team failed to appear on cue. However, they eventually got the baton and managed to bring the team home in 26th place.

The times for the team were as follows:

British Fell Relays 14 October 2006

Report by Kevin Rogan

Well done to both the teams who competed this year. We had an open team and a vets team.

Leg 1. Open team. Mark Brown came in 30th position stating the going was rough and muddy and not really to his liking. Still a good run Mark. Vets team. Simon Sharp came in 74th position. This was Simon's 1st relay for us (HOPEfully not his last) and although missing his mountain bike enjoyed the mud.

Leg 2. Open team. Mark Horrocks & Ted Mason came in 7th with the 6th fastest time on the leg. What a result passing 23 teams. I wonder if Ted has stopped grinning yet. Vets team. Glenn Whittaker & Pete Jackson came in 79th with the 77th fastest time on the leg. Pete was covered head to toe in mud. On asking Glenn why Pete was so muddy, it emerged that when a runner accidentally fell in front of Pete, he decided to jump on top of him. Some sort of frustration I expect!

Leg 3. Open team. Owen Beilby & Steve Roberts came in 21st with the 40th fastest time of the leg. Not a bad result considering neither had any map reading experience especially Owen, who struggles to find his front gate and nearly missed the start of the leg because he couldn't find the venue. Vets team. Dave Hird & Neil Taylor came in 75th with the 77th fastest time of the leg. This was a really good result as Dave kept bleating about his a) his condition. b) he can't read a map. c) he wasn't running very well and d) no toilets on the leg. I suppose we should let him have the last excuse as we all know he has more calls of nature than a cocker spaniel with a bowel problem. And Neil thought it was mud splashing the back of his legs.

Leg 4. Open team. Andy Black came in 18th with the 23rd fastest time on the leg. A great run by Andy who obviously enjoyed the rough and muddy conditions to gain 3 places. Vets team. Kev Rogan came in 78th with the 76th fastest time on the leg. This was a lonely run as the only people I saw on the leg, other than marshals and Dave & Eileen, were the 3 runners that past me and they were obviously late for their tea. It was a good leg though and reminded me of the Widdop race.

It was a great relay in a really good setting and the organisation was nothing short of brilliant, so a big thanks to Calder Valley Fell Runners - WELL DONE.

Mount Sinai Inaugural Run 30 October 2006

Report by David Hird

Mount Sinai Team The inaugural Mt Sinai race included two Wharfedale members. The start time for the event was approx 1:00am. Head torches would have been good but had to settle for a hand torch. Arriving late in Egypt is the norm, so no problems when Mark Bennett and myself got to the start line at 2:30am. Looking up at the torch light procession high on the mountain, we decided we'd start anyhow, the challenge being to pass as many people as possible to the summit. 2500mt, 67mins later and with only six climbers in front, David Hird rounded the summit, shortly followed by (where's the top?) Mark Bennett. After seeing the sun rise above the Sinai mountains and with no sign of big G or Moses, we decided to let the other 380+ start their decent before we gave chase. Again it was David Hird who passed all, to cross the finish line at the monestry first, with Mark close on his heels. Mark saying if only he hadn't made a bad route choice, he'd have won.
